In one of Col. Askins books I just read [ The book was written in the 40's titled "the pistol shooters book" by Askins], he has photos of the 39 pistol team using the flagged thumb while shooting one handed.

He also mentioned that the flagged thumb position is best for target shooting, but the locked down thumb should be used for defensive work to better manage recoil when rapid firing. From now on I may refer to the flagged thumb as the competition grip and the thumb locked down as the defensive grip [ when speaking about shooting one handed ].

First time I've read an author who mentioned using one grip for comp and another defensively. Reading the old masters produces a wealth of knowledge that's quite enlightening.

I have an autographed copy of his book unrepentant sinner. he lead an interesting life and had a ton of experience with a handgun. I particularly enjoyed reading about his early gunfights down on the border.
