Looking for some W231 loads you guys like. Using Precision Delta 45acp 230 gr FMJ. What OAL do you use?

oopie,

I've used W231 with 200gr H&G #68 LSWC loads for decades (6.0gr 1.250 OAL). Recently I've gone with ZIP which is basically the same as W231. Did this when W231 was out of stock.

I have shot 230 FMJ with 5.1 gr. W231 at 1.260 OAL.

I honestly don't shoot a lot of .45 ACP. I look at several sources for loads, but I will often try the loads on this guys pages providing they check out.

I also use Winchester 231 with Winchester primers and Rainier 230 grain FMJ. Right at 5 grains and 1.260 OAL!!

W231 and HP 38 are the same powder.

Thanks for the suggestions..... I've been using 5.3 gr at an OAL of 1.260. I'm thinking I should back it down a notch......I really need to get a chronograph.

Thanks for the info....I ordered a ProChrono yesterday and will see if I get close to the same reading as you.

I'm getting an average of 775 fps using 5.2 gr..OAL 1.268. I was hoping for more like what you were getting at 835 fps. Do you think by moving up to 5.3 gr would get me there?...I'm pretty new to this and not sure how much velocity would be gained by .1gr......

Hmmm. reset your length to take it down another .003 and check diameter of your crimp at the mouth. I run .471. Lotta different factors involved here. Also. velocities run faster than Published in my barrel, it's a little fast. However, the books all show 5.3 grains running around 854fps or so. I'm running a tenth of a grain less and getting 835fps, you should be seeing more than 775fps.

How far away are you setting up the Chrono? Are you shooting through the upper third?

I will try seating it a little deeper. I would say I was about 8 to 10 feet from the chrono. I was shooting right through the middle, should I be shooting through the upper third?....I did not know that. Thanks for helping. Also, would the barrel length of the gun affect velocity?....I am using a commander size 1911.
