Making this thread to keep a tally, record, and share my journey to 1000yds. My goal is to be able to hit a gong at 1000yds within the first five rounds shot at that distance. If you know a little about long range shooting, you realize it’s not as easy as just aiming and pulling the trigger. There are a lot of variables and math involved. So, to start off I will be purchasing a new rifle with a caliber that can get the job done ( I’ll have to do my part tho). I will update this thread with my journey, experiences, mistakes, positives, negatives, ect. Hope y’all will follow along on my road to 1K!

PS: a little disclaimer is that I HAVE shot and hit a target at 1K but, with someone else’s kit. I want to accomplish this with MY setup.

I was going to bring that up. Around what range it needed to be considered? Does it depend on the cartridge and velocity at range? Ect......

So, researching as I usually do before a big purchase. I have purchased the one that’ll get me out to 1K. I had a budget of $1000 to spend on the rifle itself plus optics . So, some of the runner ups were .....

Remington 700 5R in 6.5 Creedmoor
Ruger Precision In 6.5 Creedmoor
Howa 1500. In 6.5 Creedmoor

As you can see, I chose the 6.5mm Creedmoor cartridge to get me out there. Other contenders were 260 Rem, 6mm Creedmoor, and 300 Win Mag. I chose the 6.5 because of lighter recoil and better ballistics with good aftermarket support.

So, for the rifle I chose...... I went with something different than what you normally see out on the line. I like to be different but, I need to be in this fight. This rifle has good reviews and the features it comes with for the price..... it’s untouchable (imho).

I went with the Bergara B14 HMR In 6.5 Crd

Here is a snippet from the manufacturer’s website....

“Although there are many rifles on the market today, we wanted to focus on one thing: quality. Our B-14 rifles were inspired by the desire to bring the quality that Bergara was known for in the custom rifle world to production rifles made for all hunters. In the B-14 rifle, you will find a level of craftsmanship that surpasses all of the other production hunting rifles on the market.
The B-14 HMR rifle features our integrated mini-chassis molded into the stock to give the rifle repeatable bedding and accuracy. It also supports a fully free-floated BERGARA barrel to achieve optimal precision. The Bergara Hunting and Match rifles are built to offer a rifle for both hunters and competition shooters that can perform incredibly in either situation. The stock features an adjustable cheekpiece and length of pull spacers. Built in Spain at our highly automated and efficient barrel factory, this rifle delivers a level of quality and performance that is unmatched in its price range.

The world-renowned Bergara barrel on this long range precision rifle is complemented by our own super-smooth B-14 Action, which is a two-lug system with a Sako-style extractor and a coned bolt nose and breech to ensure a smooth feeding and extraction of the cartridge. It’s also outfitted with a Bergara curved trigger we designed to guarantee a crisp, clean pull every time you fire the rifle. The trigger comes set at about three pounds. It has been factory drilled and tapped to fit Remington 700 style rings and bases.

A 5-round AICS compatible detachable magazine is standard with our HMR rifle. QD flush cups are included in the stock to allow for easy attachment and detachment of slings.”

CALIBER: 6,5 Creedmoor
BARREL LENGTH: 22”
TWIST: 1:8”

All I need to do is add a Scope package and bipod and I’m ready to rock!

I went with the HMR because I didn’t want a Chassis rifle. Not that there is anything wrong with them (in fact they are usually more accurate) but, I like the looks of this one better (personal choice). The stock is adjustable for LOP and cheek hight. It is also free full floated (barrel) and has an aluminum piece embedded in the stock to add rigidity. The barrel is only 22”s but according to some research , you only lose around 60-70 FPS compared to a 26” barrel. But, you gain less weight and shorter profile. Guess that’s not a big deal on a “target” rifle but, whatever. Enlarged bolt knob helps throw the 90 degree action to cycle in a new round with ease. This bolt is smooth as butta! The factory trigger is amazing for a factory trigger. They say it’s adjusted to 3 lbs from the factory but, mine feels lighter. The break is clean and brisk with no take up or creep at all. Also, very little movement rearward of the trigger after it breaks. It’s nice , really nice. I can drop a Timney in there but, why? This one will do the job. Maybe time will tell me differently. Forgot to mention the barrel is threaded for a brake or suppressor. I’ll throw a brake on there to help stay on target with follow up shots.

The scope came with lens flip caps that are good quality. Also in the box was a baggie with 6-8 plastic washers. These washers are for when you dial your zero in, you can set a “zero stop”. In other words ....once you have your zero at your preferred zero distance, these washers are inserted under the turret caps to “stop” the turret from being adjusted below your zero. Example: Let’s say you set your scope zero to 100yds. You are out shooting targets from 100-500yds. You adjust your elevation to the 500yd setting (whatever that may be for your setup) and now want to shoot at 100yds again. Instead of counting how many turnsof the turret you made to get your 500yd adjustments, all you have to do is turn the turret back till you hit your “zero stop” and just set the turret to the “0” mark and you are back to a 100yd zero. Hope that makes sense. Lol

I also purchased an EGW 20moa scope rail. Since the Bergara action is essentially a Rem 700 action on steroids, scope rails were super easy to find. I purchased the 20moa rail since I’ll be shooting out to 1000yds. This will help with vertical adjustment ranges. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181207/fdc27fd419511f394d717a098340d52c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181207/a365a5048b0b7e2a6a69679c161dacb1.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181207/3d3e9f4aaf22a333b8525d9fdae547d6.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181207/496e79bd1e44d0446e31f2f9f5a2a1b2.jpg

Scope mounting time!

First things first, you have to degrease the mounting areas and screw threads to remove any grease or oil . This will ensure the loctite will hold properly. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181208/3eac6a0bceae300560bb2238965dd9af.jpg

Then you mount the 20 moa rail and tighten the screws to the recommended torque.... these required 20lbs. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181208/f6bd144eef1cb005f6c9095d4ae00180.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181208/6901f256ddced79ff4524ebdb70a281b.jpg

Next step is to make sure your rifle is level. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181208/214664f561552eabda8cc93ae64050f6.jpg

Once you are sure you are level..... install the rings and lightly tighten them. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181208/aad7ef84c52a69851bf7c70c844afc49.jpg

I like to mark the upper and lower rings that came together to assure that they will tighten properly and what not. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181208/4ed7bc53934ae26005860ce1ac2f73a3.jpg

Next, put your scope in place and lightly tighten the top rings so that you can still move the scope forward/backwards and side to side. You need to find where the scope needs to be for your proper eye relief. Once you find out where the scope needs to be, put a level on it and tighten the screws evenly in a crisscross pattern (like lug nuts on your vehicle’s wheels). Remove one screw at a time and add a drop of blue loctite and repeat till you have all screws done. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181208/e0f9f75899a7d3d5f3e8691c7a4af0e0.jpg
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181208/f10976109cbad33a1ba2ad562f1206a0.jpg

As you can see in that last pic, I added a bubble level to the scope to help at longer ranges.

The Vortex (high) rings were way too high for this setup. So, I swapped them out for some UTG ( I know cheap rings but, they are surprisingly really well made) low rings I had in the parts bin. Here is a before and after of the gap between the bell and barrel. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181208/6daa8a2e3c2178e618fe3883ce34b071.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181208/bcfd86dc6d750751d46a43a9d1de153f.jpg

That’s it, done. Scope is mounted and ready to be zero’d.

PS: check out the sun shade I threw on there. I think it makes it look like it has serious business to attend to. Also, the muzzle is threaded so I’ll throw a brake on there as soon as I find it (wherever the hell I put it, can’t find it now).

Looking great bud, and a awesome job on your write up as well. It looks as though the scope/rings are set up as a quick detach?? The sun shade does add a 'serious business' look. BTW, if you're like me you probably put the muzzle brake somewhere where you wouldn't loose it. :D

good job. For those interested, once your rifle is level, you can hang a string with a weight like a plumb bob and look through the scope to set the vertical cross hair

Thanks man! The quick detach rings is all I had for low profile rings on hand. I’m going to order some new ones.

True. I know that in Utah you can just drive out to the desert (certain miles away from civilization) and set up and shoot. Some guys shoot a mile (1760yds) with no one else around. Wish I could do that here.

Thank you.

I haven’t personally seen or read anything that shows definitive accuracy issues by not “breaking in” a new barrel. So, generally I just shoot it with however many rounds I brought that particular day. Also, I believe you will not see the actual accuracy of a barrel till it fouls up properly. What I usually do with a new barrel is to shoot how ever many rounds I brought then, clean it really well at home base. The next few range trips after that get no cleaning till I see the accuracy falling off. I will run a bore snake through it every now and then though.

Convince me otherwise and I might listen. [emoji16]

Yesterday I received the ammo I ordered from Grafs. Unfortunately, I will be out of town on the next open range days (5th and 6th) for the Sheriffs Range. So, looks like some time in February if I can’t get out to Okeechobee to shoot (1.25hr drive). I’m going to look into a club membership this coming year and see if it’ll be worth it for me.

Contact rifle manufacturer see what bullet weight they suggest for your rifle. Also make sure scope is set up properly. for example torque specs on most Mil spec rifle scopes are from 12 to 15 inch pounds and stock to metal parts are 30 to 40 inch pounds.
Most of all practice makes pefect and use the same brass and bullets all the time when you get your optics sighted in.............

Today I made sure that my reticle was leveled to the rifle. Hold up...... didn’t I level the scope to the rifle already? Yes, yes I did. BUT, that doesn’t mean the reticle is level with the scope. So, I put a plumb line on a wall and leveled the rifle. With a scope of 8-32x56, there is no way to back up far enough to be able to look through the scope to line up to the plumb line. So, a neat little trick from a forum member (different forum) lets you check it with only a few feet of distance. Basically, you can shine a light backwards through the scope to project the reticle onto the wall where you have your plumb line set up. This will tell you if your reticle is level with the rifle. I was lucky and mine was so, no adjustments necessary. I did have my bubble level off a little bit. Fixed that and now I’m ready to rock!

I have a 30-06 that have flip over scope rings. You can flip them off to one side to use the iron sights. I think its made by weaver. Problem was every time you flipped over the scope then put it back you had to figure out where you shooting all over again. Design was good, execution was not so good.

Quick release would be good if the tolerances are very good....I like the idea. Cool bud

Caleb
01-01-2019, 10:53 AM
Bipod is a good old Harris. The quick release rings are not my choice but, it’s all I had in “low” rings laying around. I don’t plan on removing the scope since this is a dedicated long range rig. Eventually I will purchase non release rings and replace these.

Can repeatable zero be achieved with quick release mounts? Sure. Does it usually happen? Doubt it.?

Allow me to translate:

Grouping was good about 3” at 1000. The group was in the 9 ring too however the guys target i was hitting was three lanes over so that probably doesn’t count.

Just messing around brother I could not hit crap at that distance. Just crazy

Caleb
03-25-2019, 08:49 AM
Lmao....

Haven’t had it that far out yet. Furthest distance so far is 300yds and although it wasn’t a bad day, the rifle wasn’t performing as I think it can. I would get three shots touching and then the last two would be two inches to the right and up. I could not get five shots to group worth a sh%t. Since that weekend I have changed out the scope rings to better quality rings and also, changed out the the muzzle brake. The brake I had on there was for a .308 semiauto. I purchased the correct brake for 6.5 Creedmoor. The scope rings I had on there (grabbed from the spare parts drawer) were quick release units and I believe they might of been moving during recoil. The third thing was, I’m still figuring out what cartridge this rifle likes. So far it’s looking like the best groups are from Hornady ELD Match 140gr pills. I have not shot it since the changes so, no update on how it’s shooting right now. Here are some target pics from the last outings.

Depends on a lot of variables so, there is no simple answer to your question. Plus, you dial in your elevation on your scope. Therefore, you are aiming center mass.
