Looks like a good basic AR15.

Having horsed around with AR's for a few years now, I don't think that I would buy a full rifle. They are such simple guns to put together that I would stick with building a lower and purchasing an upper from a quality builder (and that does not mean a well known name-brand necessarily).

Building your own lower allows you to pick the components that you want. Trigger groups, grips, and stocks are all things that can be highly personal.

If it's purely something you want for a SHTF situation perhaps a really basic M4 copy will do. If you want something that you can use for target work, varmints, or perhaps bigger game (like deer or hogs) you'll want to rethink your requirements.

I've gotten rid of my 5.56 upper and now have just 6.8 SPC uppers ... my AR's are my primary hunting guns. I bought a 16" upper from a custom builder who is well known on the 68forums.com site, then I built a second upper myself from a Wilson Combat 12" barrel that they had on clearance ... that one is configured as a pistol until I get around to submitting the paperwork for making it a short barreled rifle.

I'll weigh in with Rev. Mark. (hey would this be considered a Priestly Pile On? LOL) If you want a Guana Hit the Fan gun, a basic M4forgery may be your best option. Is this going to be a safe queen until needed? or used a lot?

A very close friend just purchased the Basic S&W M&P Sport:

He paid $599 + tax in Connecticut about a month ago. Very servicable, melonite coating, shoots well. NOW.... others might say, if you want a GHTF gun, you need to get the absolute best for TEOTWAWKI (The end of the world as we know it). There's your 1500+ rifles. In real life, we have to balance things like rifles and pistols along with mortgages and college costs. So we can't have everything...

Good luck in your decision making!

The sigs are OK for the money, but i will tell you now that there are far better deals out there. Better rifles for less. Check out bravo company manufacturing (bravocompanyusa.com) for the absolute best rifle money can buy for that range of cost.

A lot better choices for the money. Although they are black rifles not the pretty sand color of the one you linked. I will offer my $0.02 when I get the chance.

Call Eric Holder and see if you can just get a surplus M-16:D
(ask in Spanish, it helps)

Doug, I'd still still start with a Bushmaster M4, then replace most everything over time and turn it into this........:) Mike http://i1032.photobucket.com/albums/a408/jmlutz/002-4.jpg

For a SHTF gun I would take a M4gery last. Chosen gun for me is a Garand in 30-06. Why? You can't even hide from me behind a Concrete Wall and be safe.
30-06; Turning cover into concealment for over 100 years.

+1 to what Dave said... except... as I pointed out earlier... the cost involved comes into play when people have mortgages and college kids to consider. I would LOVE a Garand, and/or the M1A1 in 30-06. But an Garand for a Grand...I'm not sure I could justify that. And the Springfields M1A1 in CT? 1700 and up.

The only complete AR rifle I'd pick up right now is a PSA, cause they're cheap and spec'd well. A built lower with a Colt, Bravo Company, or Daniel Defense complete upper would be a fine weapon.

An M1 from the CMP would be a pretty safe bet for under $700 (I think).

An M1A is also very effective, and can be found used for around $1300-1500.

When you're ready to shoot some suitable rifles, let me know....I've got a few of them. MBRs rule!!

Since you've already got an SKS, you're all set.

I'm waiting on one from my buddy. He's got tons of en-bloc clips and ammo to boot along with a GI canvas case. He's asking $700. It'll be the big brother to the M1A I just bought.

Sweet!! That's also a very good price as long as it hasn't been monkeyed with.

I hope to shoot mine this weekend.

I would personally take an AR15 over any other weapon in the world if i could only have one. I can field strip and clean one backwards, upside down, and with my eyes closed, underwater, listening to rascall flats, while fending off wild crocodiles. Of course, theres always more to learn haha :-D
