Currently, I am working for an outsourcing company that is hired, by Kaiser Permanente, to handle it's mail/shipping, printing, and generally anything they can think of to make us do. I've been here for the past 14 1/2 years. I'm currently labeled the "Office Coordinator" which means I do everything.
Before that, I was an auto mechanic for a couple of different dealerships, but gave that up due to health reasons.
A few years ago, I went back to school and studied Photography, and graduated and planned to start a business, but that was the end of 2008, and you know what's happened since then. I've had a few odd jobs, but nobody wants to actually pay for a photographer, since it's so easy. http://forums.cigarweekly.com/images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif
I have been studying, more recently, to get my FFL, since gun sales have been through the roof. Not easy, but doable in MD.

Just a little story:
When I was 8, a neighbor friend and I had decided to join the Marines together when we "grew up," being that his dad was a Marine, and we both thought that was just the coolest thing. He was a couple years behind me, so I was going to wait after high school for him to finish.
Cut to 12 years later, and I got hurt playing in a football game (hit twice in the gonads HARD) and ended up getting a biopsy done. Turns out it was cancer, and my friend joined without me. After a few years of recovery and testing, etc, the Gulf War was getting started, and even though I was not in the same shape I was in before, I tried to enlist in the Army. I was turned down because I had gained too much weight during those years. I was disappointed, but totally understood.
So even though I never got to serve, I've always had a place in my heart for those who did, and currently do. So I just became a mechanic, worked on cars, and shot my guns, bored to tears most of the time. Maybe that's why I'm constantly searching for something I don't have already. Seems I have this hole I can't fill.

In the 1970s, I was a Corpman and Drug/Alcohol Abuse Counselor in the Air Force, which gave me the misguided idea to go to graduate school for social work. For the last 32 years, I have been a Clinical Social Worker. From 1997until I retired in 2010, I worked with service members and their families. (I have been credentialed at both Walter Reed and NNMC-Bethesda.) This included post deployment combat veterans. (I hold additional certification for working with victims of trauma.) I also served in the Army Reserve as a Social Work Officer, retiring in 2004. :outta:

Since retiring in 2010, I do some part time EAP work (telephone counseling) for Carebridge Inc. I am also involved with The Soldier's Project, on a voluntary basis. http://thesoldiersprojectpa.org/ :flagwave:

I teach science at a local high school, and for a local university.

In my spare time I like to do freelance art jobs (been scrimshawing 1911 grips lately) to help make ends meet.

I'm also working on a Masters in Arts and Science, so I go to school at night. Other than that, and the obvious "powder-based" interests, I like to shoot pool, fish, and hunt. I hardly have time for that though. Most of the time I'm chasing my toddler son around the house and avoiding "honey-do's". :D

Wow. Randall, that's big-time. Love Randall knives (wish I could afford one)!

I would love to post the few photos I have of my work, but they might be a bit racy to post on the open forum. Nudes are sort of a traditional subject matter for scrimshaw, and that's what most of my customers have requested, so that's what I have photos of. If Clyde doesn't care, I can pm you (or anyone else that wants to see) some photos of some work I've done.

I started working at 14, cleaning, repairing, and moving pianos. I had a couple different jobs during High School, like making SCUBA diviing equipment and making pizza. In college, I worked as a librarian. After college, I joined the Navy. Retired from the Navy in '92 as a Lieutenant Commander, and joined the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Last year, I retired from there as a Sergeant.

Now I'm starting to catch up on all those projects I've wanted to do along the way but never had time.

Graduated highschool in 2003. Moved to southern Missouri and installed commercial garage doors for a year. Then moved to the Kansas City area and worked as a miner in and underground limestone quarry. Worked many jobs there from explosives, underground drilling, operating machinery, etc. Went to work for Union Pacific in September 2007, got laid off all the time it seemed. So I was back and forth between that and the quarry. Hired out with BNSF in October 2011, this is where I wanted to work since highschool. I am a conductor for them and love my job. I am also an avid gun collector like most others here. Hope I didn't bore anyone. Lol.

After five years in the Navy I got a job in the fire department at the NASA Plum Brook Station research facility in Sandusky, Ohio. After sixteen years that led to middle management (supervisor, section manager) for twenty more years. Then I spent my last three years in the Infrastucture Engineering office as an Engineering Technician. That totaled 39 years, all for private contractors.

I've been retired for six years but I keep active at our local gun club (membership just under 1,000) as a range officer.

Very nice... One thing I learned early in life (meaning your age... :)) - follow what you love and you'll be successful - because success isn't measure by bank account, it's measured by happiness. When I used to drink beer, I made my own and enjoyed it a lot.

And - Congrats!! on the new arrival. Kids are great!

+1 on that. I had an absolute dream job designing, building, and deploying James Bond/Mission Impossible type surveillance gadgets. Took a promotion for more money, which meant giving up my great job, and regretted it for the next twelve years. Follow your dreams, not your bank account.

Let me say first that this is my first post and want to say thanks to the folks welcoming me. There were a few questions on where in GA did I hang my hat. The answer is in the Augusta area. Let me tell you that it has been 'slap your momma hot' the past few days but it is July and it is Georgia.

OK, I retired after 24+ years in the United States Army in the communications field. Mostly working in radio frequency management, a fancy term for radio stuff. I continue to work to pay the bills and currently support our Finest in that same field. I travel about half the time but with an iPad I get to stay in touch.

So it’s been awhile since I logged in last, why I stopped on this thread I don’t know. A lot of interesting careers out there. I for one did the follow your dream path, can’t always say that’s a good thing to do either… though I’ve been at it for 32 years now. In the early 70’s did 6 and half in the Navy and picked up some interesting skills. Took an offer from another faction and have playing in this field ever since. When you’re young they stick you in operations if you survive it they figure you’re smart enough to do acceptance testing of new toys. After a while you find you find yourself saying why did they do it like that “that was stupid” Bad move… before you know it you’re working with a D&D team (design & development) after ten or so years of that you find that talking to yourself yields better answers than what you get from management. They call this “Burnout” I call it sucked out. Anyway next you find yourself back out on the road teaching noobies (that’s short for new boobs) how to operate the toys that you helped create without doing themselves in. I’m finding this to be a challenge, sometimes getting a body part mangled can be a good teacher. Especially for the guy standing next to the mangleee… But I have been told by management that corporal training methods are frowned upon. They’re just taking all the fun out of it anymore, 15 months to eligibility we shall see if I can make it…
Who do I work for, good question, the world’s largest non-profit. What do we do, I dunno,(it’s not allowed) but it can be fun from time to time.

I started out in '86 being an Electrician's apprentice. After my 4 years of apprenticeship was over I got my journeyman's card and started going out on jobs with an apprentice of my own.
I've had some hard times in the past, like in 2001. When we had no work coming in. But this last one. (started in 2006 for us) When I had to make my house payment with a credit card, that's when I had to try something else.
Talking with one of my customers (http://camco.net/) about my situation, they offered me a job. I thought there's no way I could stay in one place and be happy, let alone the fact I would work myself out of a job in a few years.
Never did I think after 6 years I would still have a job and be so happy. Now I have 2 other Electricians working for me as well as overseeing electrical projects in our other plants.
I am truly blessed.

I own my own business, wholesale /retail fruit and produce. Also own and operate a commercial tree fruit orchard. Long hours, unpredictable seasons due to weather, but very recession resistant. People need to eat frequently it seems and the product has a way of turning to crap once used so needs to be replaced often :)

Yes sir, I've heard that from many people who work on PWR's... Our turbines definitely throw dose as they do run 'Hot' but are well shielded. I have seen things that only a few handful of people in the world get to see, working in a nuclear reactor is like walking around in the biggest engine I've ever seen, if you're into science and engineering it is fascinating :-)

I work as an Operating Room Nurse. Currently serving in the USPHS and stationed in Anchorage, AK. Have been a nurse for 15+ years, OR nurse for 12, and did a six year hitch as an OR nurse in USAF. Did one four month deployment to Balad AF Theater Hospital, Balad, Iraq in 2005-2006. Figured I was getting too old to play the young mans game in the Armed Services so obtained a commission in USPHS 2008. Now a LCDR/04 and just 5 1/2 years to having my 20 in. My four + years in PHS have been working in IHS facilities. It has been a long road considering I was doing push ups for President Reagan in 1983 during my four years of Army Infantry followed by seven years in the National Guard, Infantry.

The medical field/nursing has been interesting and good for me, but I must admit it is the way I make a living and not my passion. Enjoyed my eight years of factory work and four years of construction work better, but economy changed my direction probably for the better.

I am retired now, after 45 years as an ironworker. I've been out of the field for the last 30, but I still love to be high on a building top or bridge tower.
I have worked all across the country and met a great many people along the way. The last 30 years I worked with quite a few general Contractors, engineers and architects. I knew what I was to do by the time I was 6. (My grandfather, who raised me after my father was killed in the air force). He had a full american bridge belt hanging in the garage waiting for me. I started working iron in the summers when I was 15 and finished school and wore my belt full time until I went into the navy as a Sea bee, where I did the same job in Viet Nam in 67-68.

It would appear that I am a whole lot of late coming to this party ... but what the heck, someone may actually read it :)

I graduated from high school determined to be a CPA. My advisor my first year of college was the Director of Computing Services. He talked me into taking Intro to Data Processing. That three hour course changed my life! I changed my major, graduated with a degree in Computer Science with a minor in Accounting. I spent the first half of my career in various software development capacities and the second half in Management.

In 2003 I was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure, two years later my Doctors retired me. For the last eight years I have been a stay at home dad, shuttling kids, helping with homework and cooking meals. This is NOT what I ever saw myself doing after I retired, but it affords me a lot of time to play with my toys when the girls are in school. In all, it isn't a bad gig if you can get it :D

We're in the home stretch of trying to have a baby and the outcome of that will determine what's next for me. I could end up being a F/T Dad and do the dog thing on the side or I might go in a different direction altogether if a family isn't meant to be. The way I see it, it's all in God's hands and I just need to have faith!

According to my neighbors I am a retired hitter from the northeast who they never saw work a day since they knew me. Rumor has it I am on the witness protection list, I retired from the mob(nobody retires from the mob), I leave periodically to take special hits(I really go to our SC house to shoot) and that I won the lottery.
The truth is I grew a great HVAC business and sold it in 1996, after fifteen years of delivering milk for a family business.
Now I play with our kids and beagles, plant vegetable gardens, shoot alot, chaperone school trips and am a fixture at Little League.

Will be 56 in a few weeks, almost time to start round two of work life as kids get bigger. I am thinking Beaufort, SC Deputy Sheriff.

Well, everyone pretty knows what I currently do (I think), but I'll go through a little timeline like others.
First job in high school was in a lingerie store (yeah). Once I graduated I enlisted in the Marine Corps with the hopes of after being done with my enlistment I would come out and do what I am doing now. Well, that didn't work out. I made it to third phase boot and got sick. Since I went in with medical waiver I was discharged. I came home exactly a week before my platoon graduated.
Didn't know what to do so I looked for a job as a cabinetmaker since that's the shop I took in high school.
Did well, liked it and stuck with it for about 10 years. Decided I wanted to get back to what I originally wanted to do but before that I re-enlisted in the USNR under the APG program and did 8 years with a CB rating (BU3).
No regrets except for the USMC. The only thing in my life I wish I had a do over.

Well..... here goes:

I had a low draft number on the tail end of things and was concerned they would re-institute and I wanted to go to college, so I joined the Army. Started as MP, Accident Investigator, then Criminal Investigator. I went to Sniper School at Benning and was well on my way to being a "lifer"

Feb. 1975, was holstering a model 19 S&W and Charlie, an attack dog saw the weapon and jumped on me, knocking me to the floor. The .357 discharged and a 110gr Super Vel round zinged thru my femoral artery. Somehow I had some sense and pinched the artery as it squirted me in the face trying to get up.

I got to ER and a nurse I knew was working on me, starting two IV's and they were squeezing the bags because I was about out.

I heard someone say "40 over zero" and saw the look on her face and her glancing at the monitor and at me. I felt a flutter in my chest and I knew my heart stopped.

I woke up in OR when they were cutting into my legs with no anesthesia. Scratch career one!

Next, I practiced law for 30 years and had made it real lucky. I specialized in trying cases before juries. Life was good.

I did a female lawyer a freebie and told her I would handle her Dad's case that she was bungling. On the way back from the courthouse, we were rear ended and my hands went numb. My wife came to the scene and drove the other lady home and took me to work. I started back to work and she inquired if my hands were still numb. I replied "yes, but...." and she made me go to the hospital.

At the hospital they did an MRI for 3 hours, I was in a cervical collar. Afterwards, they took me out and said " your back is injured and you have a giant kidney cancer"

Over the next year I had the kidney removed, lumbar spine fused and the neck fused. To keep sane, I got heavily back into guns as something to keep occupied. I had a complication from surgery and if I close my eyes, I fall over backwards. I've fallen and broken my nose, torn ligaments off fingers and assorted maladies. I quit practicing law of course, so there went career two!

Now I'm largely at home. I bought a log cabin in Bryson City NC after the idiot doctor at John's Hopkins misdiagnosed my falling as a disease that kills you in 4 or 5 years. Wife has always wanted one and I thought I was dying and would leave it to her.

I've always hung around with GI's, gun folk and fishermen. Other than the job, I never felt I had that much in common with other lawyers. I always enjoyed helping folks, particularly when insurance companies did bad things.

I'm waiting to figure out what God has in store for me next, I'm not ready for the barn.

I started in newspapers, then in publishing software, then book publishing production, and now I run a book publisher for a large conservative media company, focusing on politics, healthcare, and financial investing.

Y'all are making me sound light! With the exception of Lonestar of course. I was a personal trainer for a while and began selling fitness equipment, things were great till the market crashed. It took me the next two years to make what I did the year before the crash and I had to work twice as hard to make that. Kept it up for a while and then our son decided he wanted to be born. Decided it would be better for me to stay home with him than shuffle off to daycare and sitters all the time. I miss the income but in this economy I would probably end up paying more out for child care. So I get to raise my son, home school my daughter and be a taxi for my other daughter. I'm the stay at home dad with the NRA sticker on the car who gets to hang with all the soccer moms and play with the kids all day! Figure I can get away with it for a couple more years then get back to work doing something. Maybe Lonestar will need to retire by then and I can buy his shift at Penthouse!

For the past 28 years, I've worked as a Civil Servant for the U.S. Navy doing flight test of fixed wing tactical jets (F-14 and F/A-18, mostly), the last 15 years of that as an academic and flight instructor teaching military aviators how to be test pilots.

Started out as an aircraft lineman (fueling and parking aircraft) during last two years of high school and first year of college to earn money to learn to fly, build time and ratings.

Needing to support myself and earn money for college, decided to enlist and spent 4 1/2 years active duty USAF as avionics technician from 1980-1984 (C-130s at Dyess and McCleland AFBs, then A-10s at RAF Woodbridge and then RAF Bentwaters, UK). Got out and went to GaTech to study Aerospace Engineering, working as a security guard to pay tuition.

For the past 30 years I have ground up baby seals to make ozone depleting products, worked at a chemical manufacturing plant.
For about six years before that I delivered pesticides and herbicides to the AG pilots in Kansas and Oklahoma. Most were retired vets and some of the most interesting nuts I have ever met and got to know. I even hauled trash for BFI with one of the commercial front loaders that dump the little dumpsters. I tried for six months to make it one day without some kind of breakdown or problem. Never made it and quit. And when your the new guy you get the worse route. It was the nastiest filthy job I have ever done. And everything that can go wrong did, daily, for six months. Looking back now, I think I did the right thing turning down the UPS job. I bet it is just as bad as BFI.

To all the vets here thanks. You guys are the best.

38 years of working as a foot doctor(podiatrist). Enjoy what I can do to help others.
served 1.5 years in Chicagos WEstside VAMC--those were the best years of my professional career. I still love to help our vets. IF I get to retire, I plan on volunteering @ a local VAMC and an animal shelter(If I can handle THAT---I am like Ralph Kramden--I try to adopt all the strays I can-- > 30 cats and now 3 pit bulls in 33 years--not bad I think)

I can never do enough to pay back our Veterans for all they have given me. I would not be the physician I am without them

I've change from a big ship builder/fixer to a Federal employee. That way I get to salvage 10 years of Coast Guard (Military) active duty.....Back in the 70's and 80's when I was in we didn't get paid squat so buying in was dirt cheap. The first Gov't retirement check in about 3 years will have me ahead of the game.nanner

I'm sorry I lied it will be the second check ;<)
