Guys, I'm an M1 Mechanic. Shot both Service-Rifle and High-Power with the M1 Garand. Have been repairing/ modifying for Match and restoring for almost 25 years. I maintained the AFPG Garands for my ANG units' rifle-team for eight years.

If you have any questions/problems with your Garand, hit me up.

I wish I would have known that a few months ago. I've been having short stroking issues with mine with handloads using 4064, Varget, & H4895 since I got it.

A few days ago, I pulled the action out of the stock and noticed the parkerizing beginning to wear off the bottom of the op rod, where there is some contact with the sling swivel band (whatever that parts' called). I took some material off the band to eliminate all contact. I'll shoot it again this weekend to see if that allows it to cycle with proper powders.

Tubbs, some of the best Service-Grades ever are coming out of the CMP now, Greek AF Returns, alot of them hardly-used. Ask for a post-war HRA or SA.
Grizz, it's probably the Op-Rod spring.
Clyde, no problem. Ask away friend.

Thanks Dave. Once I finally get moved and some good income coming in I will look into getting one. American Rifleman went to the CMP and did a tour/expo on the CMP. Pretty interesting.

Ooh, me likes this thread. I've been wanting an M1 for as long as I can remember.

No, it's not. I built that one from a bare receiver I bought from the CMP for $150.00

My service grade Springfield, it's all SA except for the Operating Rod which was HRA and I promptly traded away. I really scored on this service grade, damn near a correct grade.

I have one. What factory ammo do you recommend. I've been spoiled. Every other weapon system I own I can get the ammo through my department. Not the case with 30-06.
I also, unfortunately, do not have the space for reloading. I'm looking for a good round that I can shoot consistently through my Garand and the '03.
Thanks in advance.

This could be an opportunity for a group buy. I've been waiting for a decent Correct grade for a quite awhile; at least one not requiring my left arm in exchange. Does anyone have an inside connection?

Guys, the best deal for 06 for the Garand is through the CMP and you don't have to jump through all the hoops you do to buy a rifle, just a couple pages to fill out and join an affiliated club like the Garand collectors' Association. $25.00 a year and it qualifies you.
Greek HXP,which is excellent M2 Ball goes for $96.00 plus shipping for 192 rounds in En-Blocs in Bandoleers.
They also have Hornady M2 at reduced prices, 100 rounds for $85.00. This stuff sells for $35.00 a box of 20 at the local stores.

About 98% of the Commercial ammo is not safe to shoot in your garand, too much port-pressure. Damages Op-Rods and sometimes, Bolts.

Here's a link to the CMP Eligability requirements.http://www.odcmp.com/Sales/eligibility.htm

Mee tooo.... I've wanted one since I was a boy. But to buy from CMP you have to be a member of a CMP organization don't you? Local club? Or is NRA membership enough....

For $35 you can buy a Garandgear "Ported Gas Plug" and shoot any ammo you can find without causing issues (according to them).

What say you, Dave?
