Those are awsome looking grips! If you could put the name of the wood by each one, that would help us learn a little more about them. Plus when we order, we can simply give you the name of the ones we would like.:)

Very nice stuff!

I post these on several other forums and include the names of the woods. Most members here are also members on the other forums, so I just took it for granted. The photos are also in the gallery of my website and they are named there as well. There's probably close to 200 images there. But I will try to start including the names here as well.

Thanks for looking!

Thanks Noel. Right now I'm not making anything that is for sale. I'm trying to get caught up on a backlog of special orders. And to be honest, most of my customers special order as opposed to buying directly from the site. This allows them to have full say in how they want their grips made.

But if you "like" us on Facebook, I post updates about when new grips are being listed for sale on the website. This gives FB friends first dibbs on new products.

I know what you mean. That's one of those sets that I would have liked to have kept for myself for a while. They looked really good on a stainless 1911 knife too. They left a mark on me in more than one way. They took a nice piece of the tip of my thumbnail while I was making them. Luckily I jerked my hand back before the sander got to the meat.

I'm been rolling the idea of a set for a Karma gift for a while now. I'm trying to get my inventory built up for a gun show that I've got a table at in October, so every set counts right now. Things usually pick up pretty heavy before Christmas and they tend to slow down after the first of the year. So I will probably end up making a set for a Karma giveaway after the first of the year.

Or if the forum has any kind of charity, I'd donate a set for a raffle or something too.

Thanks for the kinds words. I've got to get caught up on a bunch of orders first. It's probably going to be April before I can start putting new grips on the website.

I used to do a lot of special orders, but learned quickly a few bad apples spoil the bunch. From now on it will be "what you see is what you get". Hate to be like that...

Alan,
Do you think you have access to a piece of wood like this? I've seen spalted maple and similar wood grips with black etching like this, but only in pictures, and never for sale for a Vbob. It's the most pleasing grip to my eye of all, and I would not only like to be put on a waiting list, but will pre-pay if that would help any.

Olympus
12-10-2011, 08:36 AM
Well, as long as you don't call me Alan again, I think I might be able to find some more of that spalted maple. :)

I can't commit right now because I'm so behind, but ask me again in about April and I should be ready by then.

Any of my COTEP siblings know of any grip makers offering Irish Bog Oak?

Never seen it used for 1911 grips. That's a pretty rare request so I doubt any other grip makers have any in stock. You might email a few and see if they. An source the wood for you.

Honestly, I've got more work than I can handle so payment in advance wouldn't make things easier for me.

Unfortunately, I think I have decided to eliminate the special order option completely. Some people have left a very bad experience with special orders. It's nearly impossible to locate wood that looks similar to something I've done in the past. I've got too many other people wanting grips and I don't have the time to scour my sources in an attempt to find that "perfect" set for someone.

As soon as I get caught up with my past orders, I will be making grips for the public and ironwood will be used frequently. If I had a dollar for every email or forum post asking for me to let someone know when such and such is available, I could retire early. I'm not trying to blow people off, but I honestly get so many emails and requests from people that I can't remember who wants what. I used to be able to do, but it seems my business has blown up this past year and I'm swamped with orders.

My recommendation, "friend" us on Facebook and get a heads up when new woods are going to be added to the website. Or starting in April, check the website on a weekly basis to see what comes up.

I'm not going to be searching for pieces that are similar to ones I've made in the past. I offer a truly one of a kind product and that's why people choose me. I would have some unhappy customers if all of my new products were based on something I made in the past. My suppliers know I am only interested in the unique pieces, so I will continue to make one of a kind sets.

The woods that I use are not something that can be mimicked or copied. I primarily use burls, and burl pieces are like snowflakes. No two pieces are alike. Asking to find two snowflakes that are as close to matching as possible would be a tremendous job. So is trying to find two pieces of burl.

The heat wave has been brutal here the past few weeks. Temps have been in the low 100s for the past several weeks and I don't even want to know how hot it is inside my workshop (no a/c). But I'm falling behind on inventory and hope to get enough fans going to finish two sets of grips this weekend.

Yep, you've gotta be quick if you want to snag a set before some other people. Those only lasted a few hours before someone bought them. I've got several hundred people hitting the website daily and watching Facebook for new sets of grips.

With all of that money you are making selling those expensive grips put in some A/C!!!!:D:D

What more can I say...........beautiful grips Olympus!!!!!:)

Thanks Auto.

I've been putting the money towards a stabilizing system so that I can do my own stabilizing and dying like you see on the colored box elder burl grips that I make. Initial investment isn't cheap and nobody wants to share their secrets on the process they use, but I've just about got it figured out.

I've got my stabilization system up and running and hope to have the first products ready by next weekend. Stabilizing and dying my woods will be a lot easier and I can cut out a lot of middlemen. I had no idea that the stabilizing and dying industry was so secretive.

Are you going to open up a shop?

No plans for a business location, just going to keep it home based for a while. Maybe do some online sales to preferred forum members at better prices than LGSs. ;)

Where I live the city makes you have a store front now in order to obtain your FFL. Not a Federal law just a city ordnance.

Olympus

When I lived in Kansas City, they had a similar ordinance. Just another reason I was glad to get out of the city and back to the country.

Got any of those gnarly desert ironwoods left?

Olympus
11-02-2012, 04:59 PM
I can't keep up with all the magwell sizes and names and what they all mean. I keep my grips simple. The bottom edge of the grips are flush with the bottom of the actual pistol frame. Anything that comes up over the bottom edge and they won't fit. Anything that sits lower than the bottom edge and they'll fit but have a gap.

Olympus
11-06-2012, 05:00 PM
I'm always on the lookout for exceptional ironwood. But after I did that big run, it seems like every knife and grip maker in the country started buying up all the ironwood. So not only is the supply of exceptional ironwood low, the demand has caused the price of the wood to increase a lot too. It was just a good time for me to move on to other woods. But I'm always keeping an eye out with my suppliers.
