Recently built a 14.5" AR-15 and a 7.5" AR pistol from 80% receivers. Turned the receivers into 100% via a CNC mill, then completed the builds with my favorite components, piston uppers, LWRC enhanced fire control group, etc. Some pics.

CNC milled the 80% receivers to 100%:

Completed the lower; specs below pics:

COMPLETED LOWER

Tactical Machining 80% lower receiver
LWRC Deluxe Lower Parts Kit; includes their excellent Enhanced Fire Control Group Assembly (trigger pull is clean and breaks like a 'carrot snap'), enhanced polymer trigger guard, buffer tube, buffer spring and a H2 buffer
KNS hammer/trigger anti-roll pins
BAD-ASS Ambidextrous Safety Selector; standard & hybrid levers
Tactical Link Enhanced Battery Assist Lever
Tactical Link Z-360 Sling Mount, Gen 2
Magpul MIAD Grip Kit
Raddlock AR Series Magazine Lock

Added the upper and various components; specs below pics:

COMPLETED BUILD

Adams Arms 14.5" Midlength Tactical Evo Upper; piston system
BattleComp 1.5 Black Oxide Compensator (pinned/welded)
VLTOR BCM GUNFIGHTER Charging Handle, Mod 4 "Medium" latch
GPS-02 Grip Pod
VLTOR EMOD buttstock
Magpul PMAG, 20 round (10 round CA legal modded)
LWRC Skirmish Sights
Trijicon ACOG TA33G-H with a LaRue Tactical LT105 QD Mount

Took the second 80% receiver and built an AR pistol; pretty much the same lower build aside from the pistol buffer tube, and added a PWS Diablo 7.5" upper, which has a long stroke piston system (AK style), and a Primary Arms red dot.

Here's the AR platform family shot. The top one is a LWRC M62A configured for longer distance shooting with a 4-14x44 FFP scope.

Very Nice! I dont have access to a mill/CNC machine or I think I'd attempt an 80% lower too. And I like that you can put your own serial number on it, BATF has no play as long as you build it for yourself.

That was key for me re: access to a preprogrammed/jigged water cooled CNC mill, which took about a total of 10 minutes. There's been an increasing number of folks/shops offering "build parties" and renting out their CNC mills here in SoCal. I'll be starting a 1911 build from a KT Ordnance 80% frame, also taking advantage of a "build party."

I'm actually looking forward to a 1911 build with all the fit & finishing work that needs to be done; a lot more involved than AR builds and more satisfying.

I wish I had access to a CNC mill...
