Got my little lady a Smith 638 for her EDC. It's a 38 spl +p 5 shot Airweight. You can run it DA or SA with a protected (humpback) hammer. You can set it to SA with your thumb if so desired. If it was for me, I would of bought a 637 with the exposed hammer. But, this is better for her with no capabilities to snag on purse items...ect.

My wife carried the 637 for a while and decided the hammer was an issue. She carries the Bodyguard now.

She mentioned the same thing about the hammer, then I showed her how to not worry about the hammer and only use it in DA.
