Just some interesting reading, and makes the case that there was no one theme on the designs of that era. This one is as close to what Resin gave Jim [ made by a guy names Clift who is documented to have known the bowie brothers and had dealings with them on their plantation.

One of Bowies letters documented an event where he used this form of bowie and his hand ran down onto the blade cutting him. The guards on subsequent knives were added based on his personal experience with his original knife.

Dr. Sheffield was visited by Resin to have his eyes checked and became famous for making sheffield bowies [ upper scale with adornments for fine gentlemen of the era ] Examples below in link
