Please pass on to other vets. It's official: DD-214 discharge papers are

NOW ONLINE. The National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) has
provided the following website for veterans to gain access to
their DD-214s online:

http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/

This may be particularly helpful when a veteran needs a copy
of his/her DD-214 for employment purposes. NPRC is working
to make it easier for veterans with computers and Internet
access to obtain copies of documents from their military files.

Military veterans and the next of kin of deceased former military
members may now use a new online military personnel records
system to request documents.

Other individuals with a need for documents must still complete
the Standard Form 180, which can be downloaded from the
online web site. Because the requester will be asked to supply
all information essential for NPRC to process the request,
delays that normally occur when NPRC has to ask veterans
for additional information will be minimized. The new web-based
application was designed to provide better service on these
requests by eliminating the records centers mailroom and
processing time.

Please pass this information on to former military personnel you
may know and their dependents.

I'm confused. (Nothing new there.)

This looks like the same page I used a while back to submit an eVetRecs request. The request was submitted, but nothing done until I printed, signed, and mailed/faxed the form. Then they mailed me my DD-214.

I didn't see anywhere that the records are on-line. Did I miss it?

Either way, thanks for posting. It's good info. :flagwave:

It only allows you to apply on line, your records won't just pop up. I wasn't aware that this has been around for a while. I just got it and figured I'd pass it along.

And you did a good job, too. Somehow I was expecting a new on-line only service.

This system does work and is quick, just not as fast as download. To be honest, I like the system of checks they have in place. It does a better job of keeping our records secure.

Thanks again!

Information like this is always good, no matter how long the system has been in place.

My experience with this a few years ago was that they only send you your final DD-214.

I guess it was in about 1985 that the Services stopped producing a DD-214 every time you re-enlist.

If you should have access to multiple DD-214s (I received one in 1984, and another in 2001), through this system you will probably only receive that final one.

Thanks for the info, but I got plenty of copies of mine and the original is in a safe deposit box at the bank!
