1911s and IDPA

3 Attachment(s)
Hi guys.

I like shooting IDPA and now that I have my new Springfield RO I want to shoot it in the CDP division.

I want nothing but leather touching my SS 1911, so I decided for the following gear: DeSantis Top Cop 2.0 (Open top leather holster with a paddle!) and Bladetech Quad Mag pouch (images below).

I have to say the quality of the DeSantis holster is top notch, made in USA, and for less than $60.00! Bladetech proudly made in the USA too!

Those of you who compete in IDPA with 1911s, am I on the right track with my equipment?

I don't know anything regarding IDPA competition, so I'm really of no help.

But I will ask/say this regarding your set up.

1) The quad mag pouch looks bulky and uninviting. Couldn't you use 2 double mag pouches, side by side like what's used for USPSA? For me, I could see myself grabbing 2 mags instead of 1 because of how close they are located together. Also, in IDPA, aren't you required to put the empty mag back into the mag pouch when doing mag changes? Or can you just use your pocket? In USPSA, they dump them on the ground. :D

2) Regarding the RO's naked front strap, you may want to look into the following products to enhance your grip. Wilson Combat makes a "drop in" checkered front strap that is held in place by the grips. People as also known to use skateboard tape/traction tape that you can find at Home Depot for next to nothing.

The holster looks fine.

IDPA rule 8.6.C:
D. For male shooters only, ammunition carriers must hold the loading devices (magazines) such that a ¾ inch dowel placed between the shooter and the device contacts both the shooter and the device simultaneously.

I think that rules out the Quad-Mag Pouch.

You can use two double mag pouches. The rear mag pouch has to be behind the centerline, and must be empty when "Stand By" is called. In the rear mag pouch, I have one mag for the Barney round (which then goes into a pocket), and one for the gun. The front mag pouch is for reloads. Any extra mags have to be in your pocket.

As far as mag changes, you can dump an empty mag from slide-lock on the ground, but a tactical reload requires retention of the mag. You can just drop it into a pants pocket. Putting it back into the mag pouch is a VERY BAD idea!

Great response. But I do believe the quad pouch qualifies. I doubt you can put that 3/4" dowel rod and still have space between the pouch and shooter.

We'll see...

Nice setup, good luck bro. I'm just here to watch, no experience with competitions.

Because you might grab an empty mag when reloading.

It's not between the pouch and the shooter, it's between the device and the shooter. The mag is the "loading device." The pouch is the "carrier."

Ok. Well I initiated a return through Amazon prime. Now looking for single carrier options.
