The length and size of the chamber part of the MarkIII makes me suspect it IS some kind of flare gun. You may try to find serial #'s, model #'s, and call Remington to see if any records exist as to it's original function and go from there. Good luck

I have the serial number of the Mark III. But it seems that the barrel has been re-worked. Someone on FCC pointed this out by showing this picture of an original Mark III barrel:



Now, on my Mark III, you'll notice the micro-stamping is cut off and reversed:



I'll check with Remington. They may know something about it.
