Default Self Defense / Carry Ammo

Sorry if this has been asked a million times before... I searched and couldn't find it. If so feel free to point me in the right direction.

If not, please tell me what ammo you carry in your 45 cal 1911, and why?

I've been carrying 230gr Hydra-Shoks for quite some time, but there are a lot of other choices out there.

Educate me!

I carry the same as you do, or when I feel like it a 185 GR Jacket hollow points which are my own reloads. The reason is because they function the best in my 1911's, and for the 185 JHPs is because that is all thye had when I started to relaod after I retired. As for the 230 HydraShoks is because what and Old LEO friend of mine suggested.........

Hydrashocks were great in their day but their time is long past. Federal HST, Winchester Ranger T, or Speer Gold Dots are the best choices out their currently in that order. 230grain HST are what I carry.

Cool

Ranger T's in the full size and Ranger T +p in the compact. But I would carry a good flat nose fmj if I had 'em.

Been loading my own for a long time, setteled on Hornady XTP and or Speer Gold Dot 200 gr HP. Dialed in at 975 to 995 FPS. I like the penetration and expansion characteristics at this speed and the recoil is nominal.
