View Full Version : Anybody ever hand checker their front strap
I'd like to have the front strap checkered on my 5" Springer... and toying with the idea of doing it myself. Has anyone here done it? Am I biting off more than I can chew?

Look in Donkeyhunter's threads on 1911 forum....he did a huge write up on a Springer he redid after if fell off a mountain on his snowmobile. He checkered the front strap on it himself and shows how he did it. He had to build a jig to keep the file lines correct, but I imagine they sell a jig for that kind of work. Sparkie here checkers wood grips, so i bet he could give some pointers.
I'll check it out. Brownells sells a couple of different jigs and file sets. The down side is they are pricey. I'm not sure how many times I'll use em. Unless I start a pistolsmith business next to my leather "business". :-)
