I gave myself an early birthday present this morning and drove up to Cabela's in Hamburg. I had looked online earlier and chose a DPMS Recon in 5.56/223.

I know next to nothing about AR platforms, but have been researching the forums and websites. I am happy with it for now. ;)

Thanks Mike. From what I read, I can easily exceed, or even double, the purchase price with modifications. I bought this model because of the Magpul pieces. (Stock, BUIS, handrail, stainless steel barrel.) I was looking at an entry level one, but with the add ons, this seemed a better deal. I can use the iron sights for awhile, but eventually I will want optics.

Very nice. I like it. I'm also getting my first AR for my birthday this month. I know this because like you the giver is also the receiver. :D

Joe,
You've got me thinking already! From what I'm reading in this thread it sounds like buying a Harley. The purchase price is just the beginning of the adventure. Darn, that chrome is expensive. But great fun.

Thank you. Geez, I hope this is it for long guns. It was bad enough choosing between a 223 and a 308. One of these is enough. This evening, I have been looking a UTUBE videos on disassembly, cleaning and lubrication, as well as old USMC marksmanship training videos, now in the public domain. I think this is going to be fun. :D

Jim, Can't go wrong with a Harley. They're made about 70 miles from me in York, PA.

They can be additive (sometimes referred as DBR disease, dreaded black rifle). I started with a Colt A2 then a Rock River flat top, an AR10 in 308 now into the 6.8SPC (currently 4 uppers).

Get well soon!
