Fine Scotch, like fine pistolas and fine women, are only for the most discerning individuals with refined tastes and years of experience. Most certainly not for riff-raff such as yourselves :D Honestly though, one bottle from me, part of one bottle from Navman, and some tasting of my new 18yo. Oh, I guess another way of looking at it is... whatever it takes! Boats |
Frame, slide and small parts are prepped and ready for a trip to the blasting cabinet, then on to a hand rubbed polish on the slide flats. The pad on the beavertail is stippled and the bobtail is full stippled, added a unique touch to this one. Thumb safety has been fitted tuned and shaped for concealed carry.
Pics later, my back is screaming right now. |
Alrighty folks pics will have to wait a few...this one is on its way to IonBond!
|
Okay we can wait..............NADA...............

The pistol was received by the finisher today and I should have it back in 4-6 weeks.
In the meantime, Zane has been working on the camel bone grips. Here's a pic of the completed grips: http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7dcaafeb.jpg Next, the grips go to Jason for some scrimshawing. Since I was a Mustang, I thought something to remind me of both my enlisted and officer days might be nice. I'm having the navy officer's crest done on one panel, and navy crossed anchors, the symbol of my enlisted rating, on the other. I'm waiting patiently, Doc! Boats |
Very Nice Boats,

Tom,
Great project! I look forward to more updates, specially the range report. |
Well, Navman sent me an email today. It said:

We never had a chance to pop it. Here's what he had for me: http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5269e5d7.jpg Those grips are by Sarge, courtesy of my very generous and good friend Clyde. He sent them to me a couple of months ago and said I couldn't say anything about them until I had a picture of them on my pistol. Thanks, Doc! I also have a pair of Zane's camel bone grips scrimshawed by our own Jason. I should have them in a day or two. Pictures coming, Zane & Jason! http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0618b011.jpg Everything on this pistol is custom. Here is custom front checkering by Navman. I've learned to like the flat triggers. This one is tuned to about 3.5#. It's meant for carry, so has been carefully dehorned by Navman. http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/...ps00eac76c.jpg The rear of the slide has been serrated and the MSH and grip safety are nicely stippled. The rear sight was custom milled from bar stock by Navman. http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/...ps21a6ca57.jpg All the internals were selected by Navman and I. To be fair, I knew what I wanted for frame and slide, and Navman recommended the rest with some help from me. I learned a lot from the process. Navman is really patient and helpful. It's a WC barrel, guide rod, and bushing on a Remsport forged carbon steel frame and a naked Caspian carbon steel slide. Most of the internals are WC and EGW with a few others thrown in. The front sight is 14K gold bead, which my old eyes pick up quite well. The gun points beautifully. Finish is Ionbond. The pistol is incredibly tight. I'll be taking it to the range tomorrow, but Navman tells me it shoots to POA at 15yds. Photos cannot do this pistol justice. Other than a woman, it's the most beautiful thing I have ever held. Range report with dirty pictures as soon as I can get some rounds through it. Tom |
WOW that is just extraordinary, very nice Boats.

Now that is what I would call a Classic Custom Built 1911,

Nice gun Tom, how did Navman break the Mainspring Housing? Is he going to fix it?

Break... MSH... what? Did I say something odd? I'm looking at it now, and it looks ok to me. Cycles fine. Just had 50 rounds through it. Are you goofing me :) Tom |
I think he is talking about the bobtail. Glad you like it.

I think I want some slim grips now. I've never handled them before, but I like them. If you have any Renaissance Wax, you need to keep them coated with some. If you don't have any, you should get some. It's available from Brownell's. It looks kind of pricey, about $16 for a small can, but actually a little goes a long way, and it should last a long time. I've been through a lot of products, and it's the best thing I've found for protecting scrimshaw, and for keeping light colored porous materials like bone and ivory from getting dirty and dingy looking. It's actually really good for keeping rust off carbon steel knives, and keeping leather holsters looking good, too. Jason |

I'll pick up some Renaissance directly. Thanks, Navman, Zane and Jason. This is the finish of a really fun project that will last me many years and someday will get passed on to Sean. Just to get your interest, Navman and I are planning another. :D This one a lightweight Officer's model with aluminum frame, Colt slide, and all the internal goodies. Navman will probably post pics when we get it fully planned and underway. Tom |
Sarge advised me to rub a little mineral oil on my ivory grips every so often. It's cheaper than the wax too!
|
....more to come...in the future! :D
