Welcome abroad....

Thanks again for the warm welcome!

Pig...It wasn't me, I swear! I never dropped any live napalm in the P.I. I have lots of good memories from Clark AB and Angeles City though!

T.S. - I don't know where you found the patch image in such good resolution. I always thought that was one of the ugliest squadron patches ever!

Those early model laser-guided bombs were accurate, but a bear to deliver. We always went in a flight of two. One guy had to circle the target to "illuminate" it with the laser beam. Once we had the target in sight, The Illuminator had to circle the target until the wingman dropped his bomb which would ride the laser down to impact. Then we reversed roles and the other guy illuminated the target for you. It didn't take the bad guys long to figure out that the bomber couldn't release if they could get the illuminator hit, or at least made to move off target. Some of the thickest flak I ever encountered was on the early laser missions. It scared the Hell out of me, and I was usually Fearless. (I guess I said that too many times..."Fearless" was my other nickname.)

I'm stealing all 3 images!

Regards to All,

Owl

Aircraft of the 497th TFS ("Night Owls") parked in Able area (late 1967)

This photo was taken from the doorway of Maintenance Debriefing in the late afternoon. During the time I served at Ubon, this was the official parking area of the 497th TFS. Later, after the flightline was extended westward, the 497th TFS aircraft moved into the revetments and Able area became a transient parking ramp.
