Any HI-Powers here ?

No Hi-Powers here ?
I would like to see some and discussion on the same . I have 2 FM clones and
and love 'em both .

BlackKnight 11-21-2014 05:39 PM

I own two. An actual Browning and a clone.

DrHenley 11-21-2014 05:44 PM

I would, except I can't seem to find one in 45 :D

I had a Browning Hi Power from Novak. It is Number 11 of their 1-100 series. I gave it to my son for his home protection. It looks similar to this one from Novak, except the grips are Craig Speigel and the match barrel is from a different maker.

Lucky Son .

Arley 11-22-2014 10:06 AM

If you can find a 40 it's only a little under weight . :0)

A few interesting facts about the High Power...

JMB developed the High Power per the French Military specifications, and had to work around the patents for the 1911, since he had sold those rights to Colt. So basically it was a clean sheet design while Browning was involved.

The name High-Power came from the French name for it, which referred to the 13 round magazine, not the power of the cartridge itself. Seems it lost something in the translation

One of the early prototypes was striker fired with a 16 round magazine. (guess that was way ahead of its time though) Another early prototype was a blowback design.

Browning died in 1926, and the 1911 patents expired in 1928. Although JMB himself could not incorporate any 1911 features, Dieudonné Saive of Fabrique Nationale in Belgium picked up the development and reworked the design to incorporate 1911 features.

France rejected the High Power in favor of a similar, but cheaper single stack pistol ("Model 1935"), and the High Power was adopted by Belgium instead (and 50 other countries as well)

Wow! That could be my pistol that I had worked over by Wayne several years ago! Beautiful

The Novak Hi-Power started life as an FN with the SafetyFastShooting system. Hated that so off to Wayne it went. Only thing left original is the slide and the frame! :D

I have another FN HiPower that I rebuilt myself, and a Browning that belongs to wifey.

RandallZ 12-03-2014 11:09 AM

Got one of these:

It's the FN built competition Hi Power "GP" built in the late '80s.

Very nice shooter . Would love to have one .nanner

Big gary 12-08-2014 02:26 AM

I would also like to hear from guys with them.
Sounds like everyone wants to fix hammer bite, trigger job and magazine hammer block. Any info, quality on new ones. Never understood why somebody besides browning didn't make them, like DW, Kimber, and so on.

It is my understanding that there have been Hi Power clones. FEG comes to mind, but I believe that there has been others, including CZ years ago. I think that Israel made one years ago. They also were made in Canada for awhile, under license Although an outstanding pistol, IMHO, the HiPower has never shared the following of the 1911. :D

RandallZ 12-08-2014 09:24 AM

I have a semi-clone Hi-Power from Hungary. It looks the same, but has zero parts interchange.

I suspect some of the reason for the dearth of clones is its complexity. There are just too many good designs out there which are easier to copy.

I have 2 FMs that I have done the mag block on . It is easy if you know how to take the pistol down . There are some videos on Utube on the procedure .
Also on how to disassemble the pistol . Not real difficult but you do need to do it right . If you are not confident in doing this then don't do it .
The mag drops clear now and does help with the trigger pull a bit . Less creep.
I personaly have never had any hammer bite on the one pistol that has a spur hammer . You can't limp wrest it or you could get bit . My wife has been bite .
Though both of mine are good shooters I do not ike the sights but have not change them out .
I think the prices of the orig. Hi-Powers are way of line but I would gladly pay it for the Browning if I could afford it . I love them .They are the most comfortable pistol I have ever held .

Here are mine :) And yeah, I did the stippling and other mods :)

Very nice thread with pics guys.

I've owned many over the years, preferring the ring hammer models over spurs. None in the fold presently.

BadOscar 03-08-2015 10:19 PM

I don't own one yet but I did shoot that GP competition model and really like it.

I know this is an old thread, but I'm new here. My BHP Standard 9 MM is my EDC. I have another of the same as a safe queen. I switched from my Colt Model 70 SS as my EDC because I decided this world is crazy enough to where I might need the extra fire power. I love John Browning's pistols (well, the BHP isn't totally Browning).;)

TLE2 02-07-2016 11:29 AM

Since pickwick reupped this thread, I checked AIM Surplus. They have FN Belgium Hi Powers for $450.

http://www.aimsurplus.com/product.aspx?item=F1FNHP

I wonder if that's a good buy, because I have always wanted the other JMB pistol.

sdmc530 02-07-2016 12:01 PM

I too have my eye on this website now...looks like they get some interesting stuff there.

Look at my pics above. If you are ok with finish wear then, you will like your purchase. Mine functions perfectly and is super accurate. The trigger is smooth and not heavy but, has a long reset (if that matters to you). The price is very reasonable and will leave you $$ in your pocket if you decide to refinish it.

Thanks to you, I just placed an order for another one! nanner

Lonestar grips. 02-07-2016 01:19 PM

dang, I've always wanted one. i'm going to have to do some thinking.......

Arley 02-10-2016 07:58 PM

That is a good price . I have 2 FMs now or I would be all over this .

Riverpigusmc 02-10-2016 09:10 PM

I had a Taurus 92 once upon a time. Kind of liked it. Just do not like the 9 mighty mice round

Caleb 02-10-2016 09:33 PM

My order fell through, seems my ffl screwed the pooch and didn't send a copy of his license to Aim. I'm not mad though, I wasn't planning on buying another pistol. Now I can use that money elsewhere.

Lonestar grips. 02-10-2016 10:13 PM

I got to look at 7 different hi powers yesterday. the itch is a growing.:D

I've been interested in finding a BHP for a while, and finally ran across one locally at a price I couldn't refuse. 1987 Mark II.

Shoots nice, perfectly balanced. Now I have two of JMB's finest.
