Henry Rifle question

Henry Rifles is a sponsor for my company's channel. I've always wanted one and I'm finally deciding to get one. The question I have is what caliber. I have a .22 bolt rifle, but the thought of either the 30-30 or 45-70 sounds cool as well.

Do any of you have a Henry and what caliber would you get? It would be mostly a range gun for me.

Mostly range gun? Look to the 357 magnum or 44mag pistol levers. My 357 lever has virtually no recoil with 158 grain full power loads, just a hoot to shoot.

I like the looks of the 45-70 Steel receiver.

Not sure I'd want to carry a brightly colored receiver in the woods

Henry are the chit!! I want to get my boy one a .22 when he gets older. Great guns.

FYI get the 44mag try to avoid the .357. They have issues cycling, they have a reputation for this. some guys get them they work perfect and some guys get them and they never cycle right at all.

Good luck...enjoy!!

FYI if its the shiney brass, it would not be a great woods rifle because it would stick out like a sore thumb.....just my opinion!

I have a 22 long rifle that I found for $329 at my local Wally World. It has a smooth lever action. I bought it for my grand children to shoot down the line, so I haven't tried it out yet.

This is my .17.

edgehill 10-10-2015 04:09 PM

Thanks everyone.

milkmanjoe 10-10-2015 04:59 PM

Any of their rifles would work for me....the .357's did have a cycling issue as said before. I never did hear the exact cause/repair. For me....45/70

Sheepdog 10-10-2015 05:58 PM

45-70 if it were me.

It's a cartridge carrier adjustment, not that big a deal to correct. Usually the right side of the carrier is the culprit.

Out of the box with no scope are really accurate, if just for the range and if you don't reload I would look at 22 ZLR or 17 HMR.

milkmanjoe 01-16-2016 05:10 PM

Beautiful rifle....enjoy

douglas_knott 01-16-2016 05:17 PM

Nice gun. By far my favorite lever rifles. I have a octagon barrel .22 and 3 regular H001 .22 rifles.

Caleb 01-16-2016 06:21 PM

That's beautiful! Congrats!

7.62Kolectr 01-16-2016 06:30 PM

Get that at the show here today? Beautiful gun. Enjoy
I think Henry levers are some of the nicest smoothest ones made.

My son and I love our .22s

edgehill 01-16-2016 07:48 PM

Nope. Shoot Straight. Had a $200 gift card my team gave me.

7.62Kolectr 01-16-2016 08:13 PM

Gift cards we like! Woot woot!

sdmc530 01-16-2016 08:38 PM

Nice like the octagon barrel too

NAMVET72 01-16-2016 09:08 PM

Now u need to learn how to reload, ,😊😊😊😊

Nice pick up Andy,

I really enjoy shooting my 357 lever Rossi. You'll find with the octagonal barrel, it feels literally like a 22 shooting it.

Enjoy

pitor 01-17-2016 07:13 AM

Nice lever gun Andy, really good looking stock there

DaFadda 01-17-2016 08:29 AM

.357 for me, but only because I already reload for that caliber... and of course... you can shoot 38's too.

The manual says to not shoot 38spl that is below 158gr because it will cause feed failures. I'll just have to play around and see what it likes.

RKP 01-17-2016 11:30 AM

Beautiful piece Andy ... congrats !!
I've been eyeing those for a while now.

Yours may balk at the 38's on loading [ depending on the bullet head shape ]. it may run em slicker than snot. It's a crap shoot. The cartidge carrier can be adjusted to the 38's but I stick strictly to 357's in my Rossi/

If you shoot 38 in it, make sure you clean the ring left in the chamber as it can interfere with loading 357 afterward.

edgehill 01-17-2016 02:03 PM

I was only considering 38s if I couldn't find 357. I'll probably stick to 357. Of course, this begins the process of finding a 357 revolver.

douglas_knott 01-17-2016 05:07 PM

You cannot go wrong with a ruger gp100.

Of course, one has to have a matching caliber revo to go with it.
I fully agree.

Sheepdog 01-17-2016 08:48 PM

Nice! Should be a lot of fun.

edgehill 01-18-2016 12:14 PM

Seems like a shooter.

First ten rounds.
http://i1078.photobucket.com/albums/...psnqvypkwc.jpg

After getting used to the gun.
http://i1078.photobucket.com/albums/...pse5q7ckfe.jpg

One round got wedged as I got to the end. I had to take the lever out. Some rounds didn't feed cleanly but this was the only one that got stuck.

It's a heavy gun but the recoil with the 357 is almost as light as my AR-15 so it's easy to shoot. The sights are the old fashioned open sights which is what I was taught with so picking that up was easy. I did find that the front sight has to be further down in the sight picture than the rifle I learned on. But now that I have the sight picture down, it shouldn't be a problem in the future.

Fun gun to shoot.

Caleb 01-18-2016 01:06 PM

Excellent shooting, great groups.

Maybe it needs break-in?

edgehill 01-18-2016 01:22 PM

That's what I figured. When the round got stuck I was at 40 rounds and only had 50 rounds with me. I'm going to get a few hundred rounds and see what it's like after that. Considering I just bought mostly for fun, I'm not too worried. I was hoping Gary or the Colonel might have suggestions of reliable ammo since they have the SASS connections.

sdmc530 01-18-2016 01:41 PM

great shooting!!

Ms like that forum is down but I saved the link. I was thinking a 686 maybe but it will be a long while before I'll dive into this pool.

Edit: It's back up. Security Six. I'll keep that on the radar.

brownie 01-18-2016 10:29 PM

It's certainly accurate enough in your hands. Very good shooting

Nice shooter, Congrats!
Do us a favor and DO NOT POLISH the gun..It will pick up a look all of its own.
Now down to loading....
You can shoot 38's and if you send me a PM, I will send you back some loading data for the gun.....
If you are going to shoot 357's, I can help you with that also.
We load 39 once a week for Cowboy shooting (light loads)
What kind of press are you considering?
you will need to get brass, primers, powder and bullets depending on what you want to shoot.
As far as a 357/38 Revolver, I can help you with that also depending on what you want to spend and if you want SA or DA, but I think that that rifle needs SA
Let me know
