SCCY CPX-2 blew up this morning in the desert

Two gun shop owners [ father/son ] and myself met in the Sonoran this morning for some shooting time. The son brought hos wifes new SCCY CPX-2 to play with. NIB, he fired 27 rounds of factory 115 grain ball 9mm without a bobble. The 28th round destroyed the gun [ no pics which I should have thought to take of the gun ]..

The barrel exploded fully in half, horizontally when held in a shooting position. That barrel exploding, ripped the recoil spring out, blew off the right side of the slide [ peeled it from front to back from the muzzle to about the rear sight location ]. The top strap didn't suffer as much tearing of steel [ like shrapnel from an artillery shell looks like ] He's shooting left handed, only a slight mark on his wrist from small shrapnel, but otherwise okay.

He's decided his wife deserved to carry her S+W MP shield from now on, no more low dollar POS's for him and his wife. Dad, on the other hand, never said a word but they are reconsidering not selling them at the shop any longer.

Damn. Glad nobody was injured!

SCCY....when you don't care if you end up throwing rocks

skosh69 05-30-2016 05:55 PM

First, thanks or the posting and I'm glad nobody was hurt.

My only question is why would the owner of a LGS trust his wife's life with a POS $250 gun? You would think they'd only buy the best for themselves. Just sayin'.....

I don't know as much about guns as most of you, but I know one thing, I ain't buying off the wall, no name POS guns for just a couple hundred bucks that I would put my life on the line with!!!

Again, glad nobody was hurt.

edgehill 05-30-2016 06:24 PM

Wow. I had heard good things about this gun too.

brownie 05-30-2016 06:30 PM

His wifes choice, it comes it multitude of colors. She chose something along the line of bright pink/rasberry, so he's out making sure it's going to run before she can carry it. I'll get some pics of it tomorrow and post later in the day. Wait till you see how the slide peeled itself open on two fronts/

He's making her move back to her S+W mp9s.

My wife and I had these kinds of conversations about weapons. She gets to choose what she carries, but there has to be a voice of quality when we talk. That's why we got rid of the Taurus.

So just for discussion. Would you send that back to the factory? If you did and they send you a new gun I would reccomend selling it without even opening the box.

DaFadda 05-30-2016 07:30 PM

The SCCY has a great feel, and I wanted to like it.... but chose the Taurus PT111 G2 for my bicycle carry. Both have a lifetime warranty, so you will get a new gun out of this... but I'm sooo glad no one was injured.

Live and learn. Which is why my wife STOLE my DW 9mm Guardian from me.... forcing me to purchase a new Guardian in 38 Super just to piss her off!!! ROFL

Truth! If I owned a gun store and my wife was into shooting and carrying, she would be toting a SIG P238 in whatever finish she prefers. SCCY, or keltec, is for those with very little disposable income, they are made in FL which is great but there are so much better options out there...smh.

I carry a G19 and when too hot and in light clothing my M&P Bodyguard 380 is the perfect size "for me".

Man that is scary . I'm shocked no one was hurt . It looks like it was made of pot metal .

brownie 05-31-2016 05:08 PM

Yup, standing right next to him when it exploded. Nothing out of the ordinary in way of report,

Caleb 05-31-2016 05:24 PM

Wow, if that was shot right handed.... there would of been blood drawn!

Could that of been a possible squib round stuck in the barrel?

DrHenley 05-31-2016 05:27 PM

That's pretty weird how the barrel could split completely in half and stay relatively straight. The barrel had to be very brittle.

What's scary is that something like this is not usually isolated. Which means this won't be the only one.

Could you tell whether it failed from the front or rear? Most pictures of split barrels I've seen are curled out from the point of failure.

Now that I think about it, Sako had a bad batch of stainless barrels that split apart like that without curling out, especially in cold weather.

Our best guess was that it started at the breech.

Riverpigusmc 05-31-2016 07:31 PM

well, at least it's a pretty shade of pink :p

HO-LEE-CHIT. All I can say is glad nobody got hurt. WOW

pitor 06-01-2016 04:17 PM

Damn man, that pistol is toast and a miracle no blood was drawn in the kaboom. I think there may be other SCCY out there (consecutive serial numbers) that may do the same due to the same poorly heat treated metal, etc.
