Info Needed
I just bought from my next door neighbor a S&W 357 magnum, it doesn't say what Model it is or what type of frame. Need your help to figure this out.
Will post pics Very Shortly......... Clyde |
When you open the cylinder, the model number and serial number are stamped in the valley area. Sorry, I do not know the correct wording for the parts areas yet.
That's where they are on mine. |

Here is a handy link about S&W from another forum.

The serial number is on the butt. You may have to remove the grips to see it. The other numbers on the frame and under the stocks, are factory assembly numbers and have no meaning after leaving the factory. The model 19 was referred to as a Combat Magnum previous to S&W adopting the Model number system in 1957 The dash number as in 19-6 etc refers to various changes made during the times the gun was produced. The link in the post above will give you a great deal of information including when and what the dash changes mean. |
Thanks Iggy, that Thread showed me my S&W Model 19 was made in 1980.

Oh, a six-inch. Most 19s you see are either fours or sixes. that's a nice one Clyde.
|
That's a dandy
I see it has the speed loader cut out Target grips.
Also has target hammer and trigger and red inlet front sight. I'm betting the rear sight is outlined white. You got a dandy. I have a similar one. Mine has standard sights, trigger and hammer. http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p...g?t=1303179340 |

Less than a month ago, I put Ahrends Retro Combat grips on my Smiths and am very happy with their fit to my medium sized hand and their appearance.
I definitely notice the increased recoil with them on my 629 versus the Hogue rubber grips it wore before, but it's well worth it. One of these days, I'll take some photos of them. Grizz |
I got the Gun for $200.00. And Glad he gave me the First Shot at Buying it...........

Wow.....that's a nice price for your nice piece.

Good looking smoke wagon you have there Clyde.
Congrats Chief. Fin |
Hey Iggy, thanks again for the lead decoding the serial #. I ended up chatting with a guy from the S&W forum site and he says that mine was made in 1983, the first year, and early at that, Woohoo. Anyway, I plan to take it out on my birthday and send my presents down range. Also, I got a new MSH for the 45 and have been itching to try that out too.
|
Glad I could help

Clyde, you have a gem and you absolutely stole it at that price. The only thing I have to add to what has already been said is with respect to choice of ammo. There is a lot written about continuous use of any ammo less than 158gr cracking the forcing cone and S&W no longer makes replacement barrels for the K frame. Do a search over at thehighroad.org for more info.
