S&w 686-1

I just picked up my neighbor's 357 mag yesterday. He is an 80+ year old German pro-gun, pro-liberty guy that just can't enjoy the power of the 357 or even the 38 spl. So, he asked me if I could find him a buyer for his Smith. I said ... "Yes! I'll buy it!" Lol...

Anyways, it's an earlier model (dash -1) without the stupid side lock. It's in excellent condition and doesn't look to be shot much (the cylinder lock mark on the cylinder is very light). Has a 6" full underlug barrel with target sites. The trigger is typical Smith revolver smooth and just the right lbs.

Here are a couple of preliminary pics and I will update when I do a range report.

well...........that's not quite true anymore. let's just say advancements in redneck science have been made.:D

I still don't have a K/L frame Smith but I may be looking for one in the near future.

Caleb, take a look on the crane to see if this beautiful 686 has received the "M" stamp. The hammer nose bushing is to be replaced, and if the work has been done, the "M" will be stamped on the crane.

One other thing to look at: Mine left the factory without the Forcing Cone being cut. I had the tools and did the work myself. It sure put lots of little holes in my arms prior to finding out it wasn't done :(

Thanks , I will check it out when I get home tonight. Is it something that "has" to be done? I would hate to send it in to Smith and wait a thousand years to get it back.

Razorwire 05-29-2017 09:56 PM

Gunsmith can do the hammernose bushing. Our department armorer did all of our department 686s, and he did my personal one as well.

Caleb 05-30-2017 09:21 AM

Sounds good.

I got in too late last night to look, will try today.

Ok so I looked. "M686-1" is on the crane. Does this mean it's been repaired?

Razorwire 05-31-2017 07:09 AM

I would assume so. Our armorer stamped them as S&W had specified that it had to be on the crane. Prior to that, there was no "M" anywhere.

Caleb 05-31-2017 10:59 AM

Hmmm.... I didn't see any other "M" besides that one.

I really think you're good to go. Above is the link to the S&W recall information. Hope this helps.

Caleb 05-31-2017 02:14 PM

I believe so too. It states in that link that the "M" should be stamped "above" the model number in the crane. Mine is stamped in front of the model number but, since these do not come with a letter before the model number.....I believe mine was retrofited with the new part.

Awesome! I love old S&W wheel guns. Enjoy!
