Fusion Firearm Review final post
For those who may not have seen my 1911 gun porn post, and for those who have, here is a follow up.
The pistol, a Fusion Freedom CCO, was purchased NIB from Volusia Top Gun. Looked great on display. Dripping with oil. Wiped it down, went into the gun range, which VTG didn't charge for, and ran approximately 100 rounds through it. Very impressed with the performance. Got it home, disassembled it for cleaning and found an inordinate number of wear spots, many where they should not be. After a few emails and FB posts here is the final disposition from Tyler Serva at Fusion. This is the coating they use. The tightness of the gun causes the wear. (It is the standard black oxide finish). They offered to take the gun back to be redipped in the bluing tank. I told him thanks but no thanks. I also told him I would let as many people know as possible about the quality of their firearms. Bottom line---- STAY AWAY, unless you want to buy a weapon that needs to be refinished out of the gate. Oh yeah, Paul at Volusia Top Gun is going above and beyond to resolve this, and I've never met him nor did I contact him to help me.. |

First off, I agree with you and they need to remedy this fault in their build process.
But, let me ask you this. I’m not familiar with Fusion 1911s. Is this a hand fit (semi-custom) pistol like the Dan Wesson’s? Also, did I read correctly that you paid under $800 for this CCO? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
No and yes. Fusion does make hand fit semi-customs that are reported to be high quality, but this is not one of them. And price does not should not dictate finish. Think Glock.

Howard, where are the wear spots at?
|
Under the slide lock, along the rails (typical), inside the frame just forward of the mag well, and a few other places. There are some pic's in my gun porn thread.
|
the rails and inside the frame wouldn't bother me but under the slide stop would.
|
Take a closer look at the first picture, those white spots are wear marks-- down to the metal. Then take a closer look at pic 4 on the ass end above the rails.. Remember this is a new gun with less than 100 rounds thru it. If I'm wrong somebody please convince me, but none of my pistols have worn like this.
|
I agree. while I anticipate some wear it should not be down to bare metal and definitely not practically right out of the box.
I have a series 70 Colt that I brought 30 years ago that doesn't have nowhere near that amount of wear on it. |
Too bad really. I've always hoped that eventually something good would become of Fusion. If it wasn't for Bob Serva it's likely COTEP wouldn't even exist. I dare say it was the outstanding quality and reasonable price point of the Bob Serva Era Dan Wesson that really started the hype and attraction to DW. Not to mention his willingness to do what no other gun company would. He brought back the 10mm in style with the limited edition RZ. He participated and allowed people to basically spec exactly what they wanted in a public gun forum. He started putting custom parts on production guns, knocking it out of the park with the CBOB. Bob Serva was just the real deal boss for a while. He's responsible for a lot of good memories.

Little hard to see in the pictures, but I am guessing that it either did not stay in the bluing tank long enough, or they did not give it enough time for the bluing to 'cure'.
It sounds dumb, but all else being equal, a blued finish that sits unmolested for 24+ hours is far more durable than one that didn't I would also check the slide lock and anywhere else where there is wear for rough spots or a burr. If you want it reblued, I'd be happy to rust blue it for you. |
Mike does good work, I can attest.
I agree that finish sucks and they need to change it. I was just asking if it was a custom gun but, that doesn’t really matter......it should NOT wear that fast. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I pm'd Bob Serva over on the big board. I heard back from him. "Yes, that is completely normal for black oxide finish on a tightly fit pistol. Just oil it up and have safe fun with her."

^^ Nor do I, but, the reason I ask is 'Frog Lube' is known to emit a foul smelling odor over time.

The only legitimate complaint is that switching to Frog Lube is a lot of work, which is why people don't follow the directions. |

I've heard and read all of the stories about Les Baer and Co. and now this about Bob Serva and Co, never had to deal with either of them, sounds like I don’t want too either. http://www.cotep.org/forum/images/icons/icon13.gif
