Shok Buff
Hi All,
When I bought this CBOB from another person, unfired, I noticed there's a Wilson Shok Buff on the guide rod. Pic below. Is this standard from Dan Wesson or an aftermarket that was added on by the owner? Do you recommend keeping it on for this Commander sized 1911? http://properauthority.com/brass/ind..._files/686.png |
Congratulations. Nice pistol. I have read pros and cons on Shok Bufs, but have no experience with, or opinion on, them. :salute:

Nice blaster I don't use them and jnb didn't make it so I don't need it

I've got a message to the owner to see if he installed it or if it came from DW that way...still interested in f/b from folks here on using a Shok Buff.
My inclination is to not use it since it'll be for daily carry/defensive use, and don't like the idea of that plastic possible breaking off a piece and jamming up the innerds. |
I've never heard of DW using shock buffs. I don't see any issue with it if the gun functions and the slide locks back normal. I put one in my limited edition RZ cause I baby it but I have never used them in anything else. Personally I wouldn't put one in a gun I was going to carry because as I understand it's purpose is not to improve function it's to keep the frame from getting battered.

What he said!

Well, I've repaired three 1911s that jammed because they disintegrated from use, two were WCs and one was a motor-oil colored generic. Personally, I don't use them as they take up space that keeps your recoil spring from moving the slide back that much. In a properly sprung and operating 1911 the frame and slide never meet anyway so, I have no idea what they're protecting from battering.

My CQB came with a shok buff (WC makes and sales them!); they work fine in the full size 1911s; I replace them every 500 rounds or so when I see a deep indent (no need; just a habit!). Don't use them in your commander size, Jubz!

Thanks all for your collective IQ points. Off it goes ...

Wait...is it a Cali thing? ....Sorry just had to poke a stick....none of my DWs have or came with SB's neither did my NH T-3 or my RIA's or my WC. Nice gun by the way! Need range report! |
"Friends don't let friends use Shok-Buffs"
No Ron, it's not a Cali thing..... |
They are not needed in any 1911..........just a marketing gimmick!!!
If you choose to use one in a carry gun and if you are engaged in a situation where it is needed the buff could come apart and jam the 1911, not good. I should not say if it comes apart but I when because it definitely will. |
They have no business on any 1911.
I had one installed on my Heritage and after little usage it came apart and sieze the slide up. Had to strike the back of the slide with a rubber mallot to get it loosened up. Never again! |

My DW VBOB did not come with a SB. I did install one on my Mini-14 though, but I don't carry the Mini concealed.:)

Wilson doesn't recommend them in any gun under 5". Simple solution. Put it in before the range, take it out when you clean it before carry. Cheap insurance against frame battering, especially in a cast or alloy frame. YMMV
