Did someone say Black Ops?

OK Chief - here's your holster. As we go through the steps, help me know what you want. I'd prefer you post here, so everyone can follow our arguments. For starters, Clyde told me that he liked the looks of the Tucker Gunleather HF2 Belt Holster. I hate copying other designs, but after playing with a prototype (that wound up in the garbage) I like how it works out.

Anyway, this is our model:

Clyde has asked that it completely cover the slide, so we'll modify this a bit. I've got a pattern made that I think will work, so I cut out the leather. Since this one will be lined, I use 6/7oz Hermann Oak Leather. I've found that Hermann Oak is the best quality for the price:

Here's everything with the cement applied and ready for glue up:

We'll let this set and tomorrow start with some stitching.

Just teasing Clyde, it is going to look fantastic when you get it Clyde!!!:):)

I'm not sure I really have a preference. I like this style - I hope I don't get sued for copying him.

Do you like the white stitching on the mahogany dye? I can do that - I usually use black. Also, I'm playing around with a two tone dye job that I think will look good with mahogany. I've also got that Navy leather stamp that I want to incorporate into the design somewhere. We'll see what happens.

First off Lane, no one will ever see my Holster unless they come to my Family Outtings and or to my Local VFW.

Yes I like the stitching. Two tone sounds Outstanding.

I'm pretty much all caught up on holsters - I've got a belt made up that just needs to be finished so that I can post pictures and get some input from the group. I would think that we should be able to start taking orders by this weekend.

I'm not sure how much to charge - I want to be fair to everyone, considering that many got burned once before. Also, this time I'll give an option to pay when I ship instead of prepay - that way I'm not holding people's money for so long. I feel bad about how the holster piece went.

Lane

NAMVET72 08-08-2011 01:32 PM

Lane,
From all the Good posts about your Holsters, I wouldn't worry to much. You can't expect to make everyone Happy..

I am looking forward to seeing the Belt and the way you designed it.

Time for a bit of an update. I want to try some new things that may or may not turn out. And, the Chief may or may not like. Clyde, don't be shy if you see something that you're not crazy about.

I decided to play around with the small piece, since it'd be easy to cut out a new one if needed. Using an airbrush, I dyed the entire piece mahogany, and then after it dried, airbrushed the edges with black, resulting in a soft, black border. I think it looks very nice, and my wife agrees. I don't know how well it'll show in pictures - I took a couple to try and capture it:

You'll notice in that last picture, I also tried adding some leather lacing to the edges - this particular pattern is called Mexican basketweave. I'm not sure if its something we'd want to add or not. My wife didn't care for it - felt that it made the look "too western." I'm 50/50 on it - I've just always wanted to give it a try. It's very time consuming...

Anyway, I'm going to cut out a new piece and start putting it together - Clyde if you don't mind, I'd like to go with the two tone dye - either mahogany/black or dark brown/black. But it's your holster, you make the call.

This one is now my focus. One other thing we need to discuss is any "bling" you'd like to add. I've got the USN stamp that I can add, but it'll probably be farily muted looking. I've also see the USN logo as a concho - take a look at these. Is that interesting to you at all? I'm not sure if I can do anything with shark skin - it seems that it's in short supply now, thanks to the tree huggers. Maybe we use tree hugger skin...

Lane 08-17-2011 01:05 AM

Just a quick update - I'm traveling a bit for work this week, so won't be able to do much.... But before I left, the mailman (or lady in my case) delivered the USN concho. I really like it and it looks good with the Mahogany/Black two tone.

So, I think we'll go forward with the rip off design, fully lined (suede side out like Larry's) with the Mahogany/Black combo with the USN concho high and proud on the front.

If it turns out like what's in my head, it'll be pretty neat.

I think I mentioned that the concho arrived - I haven't had a chance to work on it since then; in the process of having my driveway replaced. I think I've got a pretty good handle on how I'm going to put it together though.

I wish he'd finish the one he's making for me. I'm hoping to get back after them this weekend. I'm to the point of airbrushing the dye, but haven't been able to get to my tools due to the garage floor being replaced.

I suppose it's time, no? I've actually updated Clyde via PM. I have a pattern that I think will finally work, and actually had one put together over the holiday break - and son-of-a-@#%^ - the pocket was too small by about 1/8". So, I've got the new one cut out and lined. I think it'll be a nice home for the Black Ops - here's a peek at the bling:

As you can kind of tell, this one is a complete departure from the standard COTEP holster. It'll be a one of a kind.

Stay tuned for more pictures as I get it finished up.

Lane 01-04-2012 08:37 PM

I'm gonna go stitch it up now. I've gone though a cow's worth of leather trying to get the pocket right. Wish me luck. :-)
