Which Mags?
Brothers-Sisters of the Congregation; I need more Mags
for my new Specialist. I would like to know what brand to go with. Im just not that familiar with 1911 mags . Thx a bushel in advance. |
I actually have several metalform mags. They work, I have never had any issues.
|
I've always had good luck with Wilson Combat mags, Chip McCormick PowerMags are fine also.
|
|
Thx guys! Ill be sure to check them all out. Ill prolly want a couple 10rd mags as well.
|
Of course the supplied Checkmate Mags have done well thru 50 rounds anyways.
|
I see Midway has the Chip McCormick 10rd Powermag. Anyone have any experience with their 10rd?

I have 2 Checkmates, 2 LB mags and 6 Wilson 47Ds. They all work great. Watch the Wilson website for sales.
I run them all in my Vbob and LB PII. No problems ever. |

I won't use mags with metal followers in my Alloy frame Kimber, only those with plastic followers. My favorite mags are Wilson 47D's.
|
Seems Tripp also offers them in black melonite.
|
Paul, I have been using Checkmate mags for a few years and can swear by them. I have recommended them to others, and they are happy with them as well. TOP GUN SUPPLY has them in stock, NOW and I believe they may be on sale. Make sure you order the correct FEEDLIPS that your gun likes.

I use their 8R-45-RG as spare mags for my Guardian & Vbob. and their 7R-45-RO in my 3" Kimber. I haven't used their 10-rounders, but I wouldn't be afraid of them. |

I like my checkmates. Just plain reliable. Not to mention the fact that they look EXACTLY like the Kimber Pro's that I paid more than I should have for..... As a matter of fact... when I say exactly... I mean down to the feed lips. There was no difference between the two... so I'm thinking... "gee... I wonder who makes Kimber Mags?" hmmmmmm.......
Just sayin' |
lol...I can believe it. Think Ill go with a couple Check Mate 8's and a couple Tripp Research 10's.
|
Wilson Combat. I have 7 or 8 of 'em, need at least 3 more.

Couple of Wilsons would be very nice too. |
I was going to recommend Checkmate mags with Tripp Research Upgrade kits for $23.45 each shipped but the place that I purchased them from shut down their web store since the owner/operator accepted a position in the US Army in Korea. They were the best for the $$$ that I found.
I used to be big on the Tripp mags but then my Fusion and Heritage didn't like them. All of my 1911s love my Tripp upgraded Checkmate mags (got 10 of them now). |
Wow. And a great price too.
Ive learned a lot about different brands of 1911 mags and I appreciate fellas. If I can ever help just lemme know. |

I like the Metalform mags with the round metal followers. I think they have the best follower design out there. Their follower stacks the rounds straight all the way like Tripps and Wilsons but it doesn't use any plastic. They also have a good metal on metal slide stop engagement. Tripp eventually figured it out with the 'hybrid' followers, I'm not sure about Wilson? Anyone know if the new Wilson mags have metal where the follower pushes up the slide stop?

I have had good luck with Tripps 7,8, 10 round. Metalforms, ACT, McCormick, most of my Dan Wessons came with checkmates. I am not a big Wilson Combat fanboy, so it pains me to say I carry Wilson 47D's. I am lucky I guess I have never really had any mag problems to speak of. One note on Tripp mags, they only make flat base mags in 7 rounds. |

I have the flush base ones but this looks nice for the price.

Well, I talked to Brownells and they do not have the Tripp mags on sale. They may have them on for you personally. They said that email you got was prolly as customer satisfaction email. That's what they said anyways. thx again for providing the link and trying to help me. |

Watch for sales on Colt mags on MidwayUSA, which are really Checkmate Hybrids branded by Colt. I stocked up when they were on sale for around $16. All my 1911s like them. It's the only mag that works reliably in my Series-80 (only Colt mags work in my Colt...go figure  )
It may be a while though. They only have 7 round stainless mags in stock right now, and the estimate for when they will get the 8 round mags in is next year some time.:( |
