Project "Dirty Hands"

I purposely purchased this 1911 so, that I can get my hands dirty with some smithin'. I did not want to start filing, sanding, grinding, ect on an expensive 1911 so, I bought this. It's a Tisas (Turkey made) sold from Bud's. Got it for $450ish with one 8rd Mec-Gar mag. I have read nothing but good reviews on this pistol (although, not many out there) and hope it was a wise choice. I have a list of mods/enhancements I want to do to this thing but, first things first. I will give it a good break-in with as many different types of ammo as possible before I change anything on it. Here are some (lots, lol) pictures as shipped from the factory.

First impression..............not bad. The slide to frame fit is pretty tight with very little movement up and down, I'm sure it will loosen up a bit after it gets shot a bunch. The beaver tail fit is .....ok. MSH fit is tight with no wiggle but, as you can see in the pics.....the bottom has a big gap. Not worried about that because, that is something that will get changed later. The barrel bushing fits nice and snug although, I can still field strip with only my hands (no bushing tool needed). The sights are a nice three dot as seen on most EDC pistols. I will upgrade them to a target style later. The trigger...well, it sucks. The pull weight is averaging around 6lbs......ugh! The trigger also moves up and down as well as side to side quite a bit. That will be changed for sure. The magwll has no bevel in it so, the mags are a bit difficult to change fast (at least for me). The mag release is also a bit stiff and I have to really push on it to release the mags. Not sure if it just needs break in or the spring needs to be lightened. Over all, I am happy so far. The finish is excellent and looks "tactical". Has a flat look to it and was applied nicely. These pics do not do it justice. That's it for now.....dinner calls so, I gotta go. Will update once I get some rounds through it.

That particular term is usually a dig a Kimber products which use Metal Injection Molded parts as opposed to the all steel, carved by hand from a chuck of Thor's Hammer.

That almost looks too nice to be a project gun! My first project gun was an old Dan Wesson Panther I bought in a pawn shop for $500. Or at least I thought it was going to be a project gun. It didn't need "improving." That's when I saw the light and was converted to an "Enlightened Pistolero".:D

So my project gun was a used Colt Series-80 that cost $200 more than the Dan Wesson. That one took two years of TLC to get it working right.

Well, it's more of a "project" to get my hands dirty...not that the pistol needs work. In fact, I have not shot it yet. Hopefully this week I can sneak out to the range and throw some lead out of it.

I would like to try my hand at checkering, Vbob, trigger work, and some chamfering to say the least. I just can't see myself "practicing" on a $1000 pistol.

Going to the local range tomorrow after work to fire it's first rounds through it, we will see how it does. I will report the good and bad or the good and good or bad and bad.

First range report - first shots

I ended up going to the range yesterday after work. Was only able to put 100rds of WWB 230gr FMJ through it. The pistol worked flawlessly and ate every round without hesitation. This is the only kind of ammo I have on hand now so, I will have to buy different brands, styles, weights, etc. to test it properly. Seems to group nicely and consistent, unfortunately I was not on my game. The best group I achieved free hand was 3" at 20yds, I know I can do better than that (usually, 4 of 5 round shots touching each other). The sights are nice but, I prefer a target style versus the three dot for range use. The front dot almost fills the rear slot, I like a little more light in between (personal preference). It shot low for me at 10yds and high at 25yds, holding POA on center. The trigger sucks. Very gritty, creeps, and is heavy (sub 7lbs average!). The trigger blade (?) moves a good amount up and down as well as side to side. Grips suck, period. Other than the previously mentioned dislikes, it runs. I like it, worth the sub $500 price tag.

PS: I noticed around 75rds that the grease I used on the slide was starting to fail and the slide was dry as Arizona. My buddy handed me some "Rand CLP" and I applied two drops to the locked back slide rails and cycled the slide a few times. That stuff works wonders! It felt smooth as butter and that was with only two drops at the rear. The rest of the rounds were fired after that. So, I bought a bottle on my way out, I have found my new gun lube. nanner

Sorry, no target/range pictures.

Riverpigusmc 10-11-2013 07:52 PM

Good report. The front sight filling the rear sight notch is why I'm thinking of going to the Wilson Battlesight U notch rear and maybe gold bead front.

Caleb 10-11-2013 09:41 PM

I was looking at the 10-8 rear U sight and a Warren Tactical front FO. How are the Wilson U rear compared to the 10-8's?

Caleb 11-02-2013 09:28 PM

Small Update

Shot another 100rds today with no issues at all, well at least with the pistol. I shot like crap, all over the place....very disappointing.

Fed it 50 WWB FMJ 230gr and 50 Federal FMJ 230gr. So far so good, trigger still sucks. LOL.

Never compared the two but the Wilson has a pretty wide opening
