What he said! I thought they only came in 30-06.

BlackKnight 12-08-2013 08:22 PM

He's talking about 5.5 million range serial number. Many feel that after that range the rifles were better built.
Sweet rifle, btw.

Nice score Dave!

You would hope that after 5.5 million made they'd have all the bugs worked out.

Sorry guys, been watching tube with the Boss. Each manufacturer of Garands(There were four; Springfield Armory, Winchester, Harrington&Richardson and, International Harvester) had specific Blocks of Serial Numbers to use, For example; HRA had a block of numbers from 4.6 million to 6.034million. Mine was built in early(Jan/Feb.) 1956.

Any Garand with a S/N below 3.888 million was built during WWII. This would be either a SA(Springfield Armory) or a Winchester.

Very nice! Is this the same one as in the original post?

Dave Waits 12-31-2013 07:41 PM

Yeah, I finished and fitted a Walnut stockset and threw a sling on it.

Caleb 12-31-2013 07:42 PM

Looks great!

Dave Waits 12-31-2013 07:45 PM

That's a DuPage Stockset Caleb. Dean at DGR said he wouldn't have any unfinished sets inletted until the middle of January.

How much final fitting do they need when purchased? Also how $$,

Caleb 12-31-2013 07:57 PM

Thats a tung oil finish?

Dave Waits 12-31-2013 08:32 PM

Mine went together with little fitting. I had to clearence the Op-Rod cut in the buttstock where it was rubbing Then I had to free-float it at the nose of the stock so the barrel wouldn't lift.

This one got two coats of Minwax special Walnut stain then, two coats of Minwax Tung-Oil finish. The finish isn't glossy because it's hand-rubbed.

As for the Tung Oil vs. Boiled Linseed Oil deal. The Arsenals had to quit using Linseed Oil early(Around 1942) because their main supplier, China, was Occupied by the Japanese so, they used Tung Oil from early 1942 til the end of production.

sorry, $110.00 plus shipping.

Thats not a bad price for a new stock. Is it a "set" or just thr stock w/no hand guards?

There are some rifles yhat look giod with the shiny stocks but, I think yours looks "correct" for the Garand. I think I want to re-stock the H&R but, maybe have a lighter colored/stained look. IDK.......really like how yours turned out.

BlackKnight 01-02-2014 07:20 PM

I just got word that another Garand is on the market near me. By the same person I bought my first one from. Gonna have to look into it.

Dave Waits 01-02-2014 07:58 PM

Caleb, it comes as a set.Included are the front Handguard ferrule, liner, Rear handguard clip and the stock ferrule.

If you want it lighter just use the Tung Oil Finish, no stain.
