A Different kind of Long-gun

Well, picked up a new toy tonight. Bought a Beeman Silver Kodiak X2 'Switch-Barrel' Air Rifle. Yep, comes with two quick-change barrels, one in .177 and one in .22. Claimed velocities are ;up to 1250fps with .177PDA Pellets and, 950fps in .22.

Pictures later.

Interesting choice, Dave. My younger son looked at one but went with a .22/20 gauge Rossi instead. Curious how this runs for you, cause I do need another rifle.;)

That is cool gun. I have picked up Savage 24C that .22/20ga. That is a sweet gun.

I have the Beeman Kodiak in .25. Quiet and awesome gun. And the squirrels hate it! LOL

Dave,

PDA ammo is kind of a joke. It is to light. Pushing the pellet close to the speed of sound diminishes accuracy considerably.

Most air guns achieve best accuracy with what ever pellet keeps the fps around 875-900. By picking a heavier grain pellet and shooting at the slower speed you will still see modest increases in FPE.

Here is my new toy

Day state air ranger 30 fpe version. Shoots a .22 18.1 grain at 905 fps. Hawke scope. I have the tank and shoe box compressor coming for it. I should be able to have a quarter size group at 75 yds if i do my part.

nice....

C'on now, I DON'T need an air rifle! Stop posting now or I will have to go out and buy one.

If you don't yet have a PCP (pre-charged pneumatic) air gun...yes, you do need another. I bought one recently, a Hatsan, and what an eye-opener. Suppressed, it's completelyly silent and easily head-shot kills squirrels at 75 yards.

I did the same thing as randal. I have been jonseing for a day state air ranger for 2 years. I picked one up from long island with a hugget shroud (term for suppressor for air rifles). It is very quiet. Again, extremely accurate out to about 100 yds if you do your part. I have 60-70 yd max in my back yard for squirrel, chipmunk, and rat control. I will dial this in and go to town this spring.

Just spend an hour or so watching teds videos.

Well, this isn't my first Air Rifle. I had a Gamo Shadow in .177. I'm nowhere as into it as Aaron(Grouse) but, the reviews and Youtubes I read and watched all show the BEEMAN X2 to be a lot of rifle for the money. Chuck and I use them for trigger-control practice but, if it's as accurate as claimed, it's a nice bonus. BTW, this is a springer break-barrel.

Evidently, these rifles like the Kodiak pellets in .22. The .177 barrels seems to prefer the Gamo Match. I'll buy an assortment of each caliber and find out.

Many folks are waiting on the Benjiman Trail NP2. They swapped how the piston and ram were placed, along with smoothing out the trigger controls. This equates to a lighter trigger pull, and less mass moving in the gun. Along with a better rearward weight balance.

I have the original trail and have put almost 1k through it. It still does not settle down. 25 yds is quarter size, 50 yds is 2". That is not accurate enough to ensure putting a pest down in one shot. The crack was sketchy in my back yard. I even put a "pepsi" bottle on it to knock down some of the report with the 18.13 grain pellets. I could get away with 1-2 shots, before people started to look around. I have a couple of acres here in norwalk. So, it was just to loud even for semi often pest control. The trigger, is Horrendous on the Trail NP1. there is a Golden trigger sear replacement that makes a big difference.

This is where i have been lurking for a few years. Great place to learn about springers, NP's, PCP's and just fun stuff.

I was shooting mine today at 10m into the long side of my crossbow broad head block.

The pellets went all the way through. The wife was not amused.

skosh69 02-03-2014 06:30 PM

Dang, I kinda agree with Caleb...y'all need to stop cause I don't need to go buying air guns now!

Only airguns I've ever had were Crosman airguns as a kid. Had the .177 pellet/bb rifle and the .22 pistols. Cool enough for plinking birds and such.

Grouse 02-03-2014 06:36 PM

Watch the ted's hold over vids. these rifles are amazing.

They are also one of the few things you can hunt with in CA and still use lead ammo.

I know a lot of guys out your way use a pellet rifle to hunt quail.

Thanks for the link Aaron, I'll check it out later.

Update; Somewhat of a range-report

Well, went over to Chuck's to reload and took the X2 with me. While I was there we gave it a half-azzed checkout due to the weather, it had just stopped snowing when we took it out back to fire it a few times. All Chuck had in the way of .177 pellets were some RWS 9.3 grain supermags(?) so, I loaded one up and aimed for a fencepost and fired. Recoil was very light but, it sounded like I just fired a .22LR! Chuck looked at me and went inside to get the Chrono. Set up the Chrono and five feet from the screens I fired three rounds; 1168fps, 1165fps, 1168fps! This was with heavier than standard pellets! The rifle is rated for 1000fps with standard match pellets,( 7.1 grain), this was great!

Only problem I have is with the scope. It's a BEEMAN 4x32 and it's blurry. No amount of adjustment on the ocular would correct it so, Ordered a BSA 3-9x40AO scope and mounts from Airgun Depot. Not really a big thing, I kinda figured it was a cheapy scope or it wouldn't have come with the rifle. Problem is, there are no open sights on it.

So, gotta wait til I get the scope for any accuracy tests but, I'm expecting good results. The fence post I shot at first was a good 55 yards away and I hit it with the one shot.

So, give me a week or two to get the scope/mounts in and mounted.

Grouse 02-09-2014 07:55 PM

It will temper down quite a bit. it takes a few hundred rounds.

RandallZ 02-10-2014 10:44 AM

You may bet getting a bit of 'dieseling' from oil inside the compression chamber. Once all the oil burns off, it should quiet down. You'll also lose a bit of power, but gain accuracy at the same time.

Dave Waits 02-14-2014 01:57 PM

Well, just mounted the new BSA 3-9x40AO and mounts, need to sight it in this weekend.
