East or west river?

sdmc530 11-12-2011 10:00 PM

The big city of course...Sioux Falls. You must be either in Rapid or south. I spend some time every year in Spearfish for work, we work the sturgis rally and stay at the college..pretty nice there. live to camp out there by the faces too.....you are lucky to live in such a beautiful place!

bald1 11-12-2011 11:38 PM

I'm within eyeball distance of Mt. Rushmore :) And yeah the country here is beautiful :D

You mentioned working Sturgis during the Rally.... care to share more?

sdmc530 11-13-2011 11:15 AM

ITS INSANE....I feel insane for working it...I was at first surpised at what went on there but after oh a day it was just mundane. My favorite from last year we stopped two girls in a large truck. In the back of the truck they had about 4000 condoms, they called them party balloons...They were later arrested for what they were there to do from what I was told. This year was bad I was working the day the shooting in Rapid went on. I have a Friend who lives just down the road from the faces. He works for the Parks service as a ranger in the park. Lives between iron mt. road and the mt rushmore.

bald1 11-16-2011 12:27 AM

Ah... a LEO. Good deal. My stepdad is a retired Syracuse LEO and then retired Niagra Mohawk Nuclear Power Plant Security Supervisor. He's in his mid-80s now. Yeah that shooting was terrible for all concerned. My son knew one of the RC cops that died. The perp used a Dan Wesson 357 revolver. Killed 2 and wounded one with 5 shots fired.

As for Mt Rushmore, the former Director of Interpretation and Education was previously a LtCol (Nav Singh) I knew well at Ellsworth. He's in Hawaii now at Haleakalā National Park. Actually there's quite a few retired USAF guys working at Rushmore these days (e.g. Paul Hammett, CMSgt)

sdmc530 11-16-2011 07:59 AM

You might know my friend, Steve Wohlman, he is a retired sniper from the marines, he was HP for a few years now he's playing ranger gord!? All aroung good egg....

Snipersnest 11-16-2011 11:36 AM

I retired from the job in 2002 and did Sturgis Bike Week with the bride. We had a good time and saw some beautiful country. We came upon a headon while riding the Spearfish Canyon Road, not good. Did all the attractions and saw all the sights. We stayed in Belle Forsch away from all the hullabaloo. Saw a lot of coppers detailed there from all over the place, and got to swap off a lot of patches. Great trip!

sdmc530 11-16-2011 11:59 AM

It's amazing on who comes from where to go to Stugis,....a tiny no place special...amazing!

Thedragonslayer 11-16-2011 09:11 PM

Welcome to our little crazy train!:D

bald1 11-16-2011 09:20 PM

sdmc530,

Unfortunately I don't know Wohlman. You know Robert Rybeck? He's a neighbor and must be the tallest Trooper currently on the force! :D:D:D

Actually we've got a lot of LEOs in the neighborhood.... couple sheriffs, RCPD, and the senior US Marshall. The later (Jerry Roe) lost his youngest son (Jared) tragically this summer just days before he was to deploy to Afganistan.

sdmc530 11-16-2011 10:19 PM

I know Rybeck fairly well. He is the President of the South Dakota Highway Patrol Association...I know him because I am on the board and see him at meetings. Stand up guy. I didn't know the US marshall but it's a shame about his son. They have had a ruff year down there with all the terrible deaths there, the three in rapid city and the one in Custer..just a waist...make me so mad, angry, sad, and dissapointed all at once!
