How Much Extra Ammo?

By Sheriff Jim Wilson

July 10, 2014

Carrying a reload for your defensive sidearm is a smart idea for many reasons, but how much is enough, and how much is too much?

A respected defensive instructor of my acquaintance recently posted a brief, but well-written essay regarding carrying extra defensive ammunition. He pointed out several reasons why extra ammo might be needed, such as having a firearms malfunction, a faulty magazine or faulty ammunition. He ended by suggesting that, assuming that one is carrying a defensive handgun of adequate caliber, one extra reload was all that was needed.
So who carries extra ammo, how much, and why?

Personally, I carry one in the pipe, a full mag in the well, and two spare mags for my 1911 Colt Combat Commander, the same amount of 'extra' ammo as I did when I was a LEO.

I have one in the pipe and 4 extra mags (8 rds) most gang bangers carry automatic rifles, so I want to have a chance at least..............

I appreciate this thought provoking post! More often than I care to admit, I leave the house with a whopping five rounds of .38 in my little pocket snub. I suppose the loaded speed strips and larger guns I tend to leave behind won't do me much good "if"

TLE2 07-10-2014 02:47 PM

I used to carry 2 extra mags plus the 8 in the weapon. I've stopped carrying the extras: I need to start up again.

Shark1007 07-10-2014 03:02 PM

I usually carry one extra mag on me, three or four in console of car.

I grade my mags, since I have a few. Tripps and Wilsons are marked A+ on base in magic marker and they are evaluated on range trips to insure no malfunctions. These are the carry and the extra mags. A's and B's stay home or go to the range.

With my Beretta, I carry an extra mag so I have 25 total rounds. With the M&P9, I usually don't carry the extra mag of 17, but I rarely carry that one. It's a house gun now.

My wife usually has an erta mag with her Bodyguard.

Hodawg 07-10-2014 06:16 PM

EDC is 15+1, plus an extra mag of 15 makes 31 total. The BUG adds 5 more if I'm carrying that too.

7 in mag and 1 in pipe......that's about it. I have to find a comfortable way to carry spare mag, just have not found that yet.

Riverpigusmc 07-10-2014 07:01 PM

one in the tube, eight in the mag, usually two spare 47D's in a dual mag pouch...although i have a single mag pouch for when I have to dress up :p

AutoMag 07-10-2014 07:02 PM

I carry my RIA TCM 22 Mid Size, 17 rounds in the magazine and 1 in the chamber plus 1 additional 17 round magazine so 35 rounds total.

If I am in a situation where I need to fire that many rounds then I am in a situation that is out of my control!!!

zukinut 07-10-2014 07:20 PM

When I head out its my G19 15+1 and a spare G17 mag. If I have the 1911 8+1, spare 8 on the belt in a mag pouch and a spare 10 in my pocket.

Need to pick up a BUG, but the wife's car seems to have other ideas about that here lately.

Sheepdog 07-10-2014 10:25 PM

1 in the pipe, 7 in the mag, 2 ten round Trips.

Carl in GA 07-10-2014 10:51 PM

Usually my Valor with 7+1 and another 8 in the pouch. Once in a while I carry an M&P compact with 12+1 and a spare 17 rounder.

DrHenley 07-10-2014 11:29 PM

One 7 mag in the pipe and three spares. The spares are 8 round mags loaded with 7 for reliability.

Which is worse? Too much ammo or too little ammo?

I would like to hear from anyone who, while in a gunfight, said to themself: "Damn, I brought too much ammo!"

That is funny,
I too am bad about extra stuff. I don't carry extra mags, so 6-8 rounds depending on gun...Dont like to carry MORE weight than I already do naturally.

Shadow 07-11-2014 09:50 AM

Bad here too, carry G-26 with 11+1 and 2 spare 15rd mags in the console (wait Mr BadGuy, let me run back to the car) :D

Exactly the same for me with a 1911....

No matter what semi pistol I carry I fill the gun to capacity and carry two spare mags.
