Favorite pistol powder
What are your favorite pistol powders and why are they your favorites? Can you find them easily at this time?
|
HP-38 - very economical - Can't find it
Unique - very versitile - Can't find it Trail Boss - fills up the case and is very consistent as a result - Can find it. I started off using Trail Boss with just cast because that's what it was designed for, but turns out it works fine with jacketed too. http://www.cotep.org/forum/picture.p...&pictureid=864 |
W231. Caleb has better luck getting his testicles back than I do of finding this powder. What I WANT is VV N310 or N320 for self defense rounds

I guess the answer is whatever is on the shelf. |
I see three of us are in the same boat.....so far......I had a possible on some W231...hasn't shown up yet, and doesn't look good. The source is reliable, they are getting screwed around too. Word is hoarders are buying and storing. I have some, hardly hoarder volume. Gun shows might be the high priced way to go, unless friends in outer states ship it in and we pay the high price of shipping powder as a Hazmat. This really sucks, I could always get powder from two sources, both only have black powder now. And not much of that for muzzleloaders.

231 is my 45 load fav...I have about 11lbs on hand but still hard to find. Autocomp is a newer powder, works well for 45 and the 10MM....easy to find right now but $30 is getting to spendy IMO.....

W231 but haven't seen it in a while. Don't have a pressing need for more so I will wait. I also use Trailboss for 38-40 WCF loads but have been seeing more and more loads for it for more standard calibers like .38, .45 and such. I find H110 at the show I went to and they had a bunch. I used it for 300 Blackout. I haven't seen any AR powder and have put off buying a set of 5.56 dies because of that. No since in getting the dies till I have powder to load in it.

AFAIK, Trailboss is great, almost impossible to have a doublecharge, but meters like hammered dog crap

Well, Unique and 2400 for revolvers, HP-38 for the 1911. Most handgun powders aren't that hard to find around here now. I gotta go tomorrow and pick up a couple pounds of 2400. If there isn't any, Chuck and I have 296, AA-9 and H-110 on the shelf. Rifle powder is a bit different. Took me three days to find powder for the 06. Ended up getting something other than what I wanted but, will work fine. Was looking for Varget, ended up having to buy more IMR-4895(Could only buy three pounds because of a sales limit).
|
I like IMR 700x
|
Winchester 231 and Winchester 296.......why because it works and the fact that I have about 32 pounds of each helps also!!!!:D:D
|
Used to use 231 but moved to WST decades ago. It's cleaner burning. Haven't looked for powder in years, no longer reload.

Hand Gun Powders
Over the years I have settled on Solo 1000 and Solo 1250 for all of my handgun loads, except for a few rounds with either H110 or 296 for the hot magnum stuff.
Of course it looks like Solo 1250 is going, or gone by now, but Solo 1000 is still used by some shot gun shooters so it is still available. I'm too darn old to start experimenting with new loads again. |
1. VV N320; my top pick for loading 9mm. It shoots very clean, pretty hard to find.
2. 700-X; my top pick for loading .45acp. Shoots pretty dirty (shotgun powder), is very accurate and cheap. Right now it's pretty hard to find. 3. Bullseye. My pick for loading .38spl because it's cheap, accurate, and I like having it around. It's also hard to find right now. Both Bullseye and 700-X are "old school" powders. I like them because you can load pretty much any handgun load with either one. |
Powder is starting to show up here in NC
It's been very hard to find any pistol powder here in NC, but it's finally starting to show up at some dealers at normal prices.
I finally started seeing TiteGroup at shows (overpriced) also. Just bought some Hodgdon CFE Pistol. This may be the new HP-38 / Win 238 powder. Adds a component to reduce copper fouling. 8 pounds at $170. Also found a new Alliant powder BE-86 which is pretty good. Probably a new formulaton of BullsEye. Burns well, and takes a bit more than the more compact powders (6.5 gn in a .45acp FMJ 230gn). Marc |
