S&W 986 9mm

So Hello to all

What Have I been doing...well except for a heavy work load during the mid term elections and getting ready for next years Steel Challenge Nationals and in the Cowboy world, the Florida State siege, the Gold Coast two day and the Ides of March two day and loading about 2K -6K of ammo a week .....Not Much

The attached is my new wheel gun for the revolver section of the Nationals.

It started off as a new S&W 986 / 9mm 7 shot.

after about two week of inside work, it now has an Apex competition hammer, Apex extended firing pin, recut sear, rear sights from LPA (installed but on the next updated photo).
It has a HiViz .310 hight F.O. Green front.
Grips were made for me by Hogue and the extended cylinder release by Hogue.

It uses moon clips made by TX Industries.

Trigger pull is at 6.5#'s DA (only) and I use loads that are 9mm, Federal primer, 231 powder with 3.5 g.

Would you believe I drove 426 miles one way to shoot with this guy and he didn't even bring this toy to show me. But he did get lunch.

Looks great and i'm sure it shoots better than it looks.

How does that calender release work? It looks like a lever you push down like a slide release but I always thought revolvers cylender release by pushing forward.

It just replaces the original cylinder release and to PUSH it forward and the cylinder opens....It is designed for faster reloads..It comes in two sizes...I like the shorter one and the longer one extends back near the hammer.

This gun is a true please to shoot during steel challenge but I had to turn down the load to a softer load that will still take down some steel and not beat up my hands so much (one of the problems of getting older)

Reload data

Just got mine, would you mind sharing your reduced power reload info?

Thanks!!

Hi Mike

I am using Clay Dot at 3.9g with a Berry's 130g Plated bullet and because I have re-worked and tuned the internals, I am using ONLY Federal Primers. Trigger pull is 6#'s.
I have changed the grips and now have an Eotech XPS2.0 on top.

For load data on 231 look in the load data section for a full breakdown that I posted after a full chorine test.

You should see what he does with custom glock like weapons such as Lonewolf, didn't mean to change the subject! Well they are 9mm,.

USNMike 04-07-2015 10:30 PM

Thanks very much, have mine now, disappointed my gunsmith did not have the red fiber optic sight installed - so I will look in Nashville at the NRA show and hope to find one that will work. Will get to shoot it next week!

girphoto 04-08-2015 10:18 AM

You can find the sight at Brownells or you can ask me and I should have one in stock.
Gary
