New Mec-Gar 10 Round 9MM Magazines
At the NRA Convention I was introduced to David Kochol with Mec-Gar by Steve Evatt from Epicosity. David asked me if I would test and evaluate their new Mec-Gar 10 round 9MM magazine. I told him I would be happy to do it. Here is my range report on the new Mec-Gar 10 round 9MM magazines. I am by no means a writer so please bear with me on this report!! Sorry, no pictures. Where I shoot no cameras or cell phones are allowed. I know........pictures or it did not happen!! :)
I received 4 of the brand new Mec-Gar 10 round 9MM magazines the other day. Mec-Gar item number MGCGOV910. I had a range trip planned for the next day after they arrived. I loaded 2 of the magazines with 10 rounds of Armscor 124 grain FMJ 9MM and the other with 10 rounds of Federal 115 grain JHP the day before and left the other 1 empty. I wanted to see if it made any difference in feeding. At the range: 1911 used: Rock Island Armory Tactical chambered in 9MM. Ammunition used: Armscor 9MM 124 grain FMJ. Federal 115 grain JHP rounds. Magazines used: Mec-Gar MGCGOV910 new 9MM 10 round magazines. I ran 1 magazine with the Armscor 124 grain FMJ that was loaded the previous day through the 1911 at a rapid fire and then the magazine loaded with the Federal 115 grain JHP and there were no problems at all with the magazines locking into place or feeding the rounds. Last round and slide locked into place. Everything went as it should. I then loaded 10 rounds into the magazine that I had left empty and ran the 1911 at a rapid fire using the 124 grain FMJ and then another magazine with the 115 JHP and again there were no problems at all with the magazine locking back the slide or feeding the rounds. Again everything went as it should. I took the next magazine that I had loaded with 10 rounds the previous day and ran it through my 1911 at a slow rate of fire and again everything went off without any problems. Feeding and slide lock back was excellent. I then loaded up the other magazine again that I had left empty and once again ran it through my 1911 at a slow rate of fire and once again everything went smoothly, no problems at all. I ran the same scenario again 5 times using the standard 124 grain FMJ ammunition and 5 times using the Federal 115 grain JHP ammunition and never had a failure of any kind using the new Mec-Gar 10 round 9MM magazines. Upon the last round firing the slide locked back as it should. To summarize, these new Mec-Gar 10 round 9MM magazines are excellent and proved very reliable in my RIA Tactical 9MM. They locked up great, fed the ammunition without any problems and always locked back on the last round. I only had available the Armscor FMJ and the Federal JHP ammunition but I am sure that the magazines would have functioned as intended with other brands, grains and bullet types. I have always had great luck with all of my firearms that came with the Mec-Gar magazines and also the Mec-Gar magazines I have purchased separately have all exceeded my expectations of quality and affordable magazines. Great write up John. Complete opposite of what I generally hear about MecGar mags. |
Good to hear Mec-gar 9mm mags are better now. They used to make some pretty cheap crappy mags. I have a few in the basement with broken followers. Too bad they don't make these in 38 Super yet.

From report finction good.,
A,couple of questions Do they have metal or syntHetic followers? How about durability? Seem well made? Thanks |
I didn't see a suggested retail price? Do we know "real world" prices on these mags?
|
Col. Mike, on the 9MM magazines I tested the followers are heat treated steel. They did seem pretty durable and very well made.
This is from the Mec-Gar web site about the new 9MM magazines. Features Caliber 9 MM Capacity 10 High Cap Carbon Steel Tube, heat-treated for strength Higher tensile music wire spring Steel follower Welded butt-plate DaFadda, I have only seen the price for them on the Mec-Gar web site and they were right at $30.60 but I am sure that is full retail. |

$30.60 CTD is listing them for 17.62 but picture is wrong so buyer beware (plus company is crap) :) http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/product/7-MGCGOV910AFC R&R Arms as them for $21.39. http://www.rrarms.com/mec-gar-magazi...10rd-blue.html James |
