Welding a 1911 Slide

I am hoping to "re-create" the 1911 Springfield Champion to strictly a bad breath distance carry gun. All shooting will be point shooting, no sights. My question is:
Can I remove the sights and have the frame welded where the front and rear sight mount, then have the weld ground perfectly smooth before re-finishing the gun. I may flat top the gun, that is easy enough. But the welding has me concerned. Anyone have experience with this?

No experience here but, if you are just trying to fill tbe sight slots.....why not grind some sights down smooth and install tbe bases?

I have a gun that's been welded. It works fine, but be aware the finish won't be the same...different alloys make the welded bits look different.

Nah, weld grind, polish, finish. Want a finished product. And if I decide to flat top the gun I need a solid top.

I have just read that there are welding sticks that take finishes well, but I am looking at TR Gun Kote so color won't be an issue. George Roghaar lives around the corner from me, he will do a great job and no shipping cost.

Make sure you take before and after pics to share.

Joe, Brownells used to have dovetail blanks you could tap in spot weld then file and stone to shape, don't know if they still do though.

I know someone who is fixin' to practice Quick Kill drills :D

I need to take Brownie's class, long as we didn't yell at each other too much....

In the long run this may be the less expensive alternative....
