Home Defense: How Many Walls Will Your Bullets Go Through?

As you will see, and I was surprised myself, birdshot may be a good idea for inside the home defense.

Home Defense: How Many Walls Will Your Bullets Go Through?

When we think of home defense, we often picture taking out zombies at close range. The reality is you also need to be concerned about over penetration.

Remember those old shooting rules your grandfather yelled you, "Be sure of your target and what is behind it!" That applies when shooting at zombies in your home, and knowing what is behind them.

Drywall is great for separating space into rooms, but it isn't very good at stopping bullets.

Check out this video with Rob Pincus that shows how far bullets go through drywall:

Thanks for posting. I have used 5.56 and either a Mini 14 or Kel Tec PLR16 with a 60 round shurfire mag for home defense. I use Speer Gold Dot 55 or 64 grain JSP as it seems to penetrate least.

Two stories: I handled a case once for a client who was sleeping in a hotel peacefully. Couple rooms over a guy was playing with his Glock 19 before he went to bed and fired a 135 grain Corbon round. It went thru 3 walls (6 sheets of drywall) and my guy's left arm and dropped on the bed next to his heart. The bullet had no deformation and looked like it could be reloaded.

Next and funny one was I handled the internal against a police Sgt. He had a ND with a 12 ga. using buckshot. He lived in a duplex and it shot thru the wall into the neighbor's bathroom.

When they arrived home, he had broken into their home and was in the bathroom with a drywall repair kit and paint , trying to get it patched and painted before they got home. Must have been a nerve wracking trip to Home Depot.

After having the daughter if the shottie is coming out something is going real bad. She is across the house from us and I don't to chance it even with birdshot.

My daughter sleeps across the house on a lowboy queen bed. There's a dresser facing her bed. I think if I ever had to shoot an invader, I'd shoot from a low angle if it faced her room at all. It's something to think about for sure.

not for me unfortunately. Her crib is on the wall behind the TV/dresser its on. The only way we could do the room with her being to being able to access outlets. We have a very strange setup in our home when it comes to electrical plugs.
