Social media is on fire with memes about outlawing semiautomatic weapons and “assault” rifles, written by people who haven’t a clue what either one of these is, after last week's shooting in Orlando. Seeing those memes is a little like reading that Barack Obama is an Illuminati lizard: It’s both amusing and terrifying.

I don’t belong to the NRA. I don’t like guns or hate them. Though I’ve shot plenty, I prefer the magic and meditation of archery. Still, as a hunter, I feel obligated to address the issue.

Virtually every attempted gun ban focuses on rifles, most commonly used by hunters and target shooters and rarely used in crime. In Michigan, around 650,000 hunters annually enter the woods safely with these rifles and shotguns in pursuit of organic meat.
