I'm not blaming the cops, they had no choice. It just makes me sick that they are put in that situation in the first place.

Agreed. With only one patrol vehicle, they'd have been outnumbered, possibly outgunned. They did well to evac. The only thing that could have stopped that mob was something on the order of a "riot team" (with gear, shields, etc.). Not easily deployable on a moment's notice.
