I have looked into this a bit. I think this comes down to the snubbie factor and is part of the reason that the FBI went to federal 158 grain Ny-Lock for 38 and 357 snubbie revolvers. This ammo was specifically designed to have reliable expansion and penetration out of snubbies. If i remember correctly they found that 2" snubs simply did not generate enough FPS to reliably ensure consistent hp opening. Basically the bullet is to slow for Jacketed HP out of 2" snubbies. In their testing they tried faster powders but found while they got the speeds they needed they increased pressures to much. So they went with a combo of softer lead, with a protective jacket and a slightly faster powder. Giving something like 860 fps out of a 38spl 2".

It is what i carry in my wife's 642, I even load it in the 627 from time to time.

It is a super soft lead hp, jacketed in nylon. it is very accurate ammo, and opens quite reliably. There are a dozen or so video's doing the same test you have done on youtube. It comes in 2 flavors, 357 and 38spl. I typically only buy the 38 spl.

I'm quite surprised at the results. 1100 fps should definitely be fast enough to cause expansion.

I've been loading Gold Dots for my .40 Short & Weak and .45 Auto for years, partly based on the test results I've been able to locate.

My all purpose .45 load uses a near max load of Unique to drive 230 grain XTPs. I wonder if they're also separating. I checked my chrono data, and my load has them moving at an average of 926 fps from 4 1/4" barrel and 949 fps from 5".

I've been loading XTP's for self defense. When I get my chrono I'll see where I'm at. Seems like the XTP has pretty decent expansion.

Yes Lane, it did expand very well but, the jacket-separation troubles me. I want the jacket peeling back and forming a bunch of little knives that cut and cause extra trauma, not peeling off of the lead. While a 190grain at .732 is good, it's still losing 40 grains of weight that should, in a well-constructed bullet, stay there.

I carry Gold Dots in my .44 Spl snubbie. Hmmm. Hey, if ya need more milk jugs, have another kid. Consider it a public service for COTEP testing purposes.

I have good luck with the ranger t series. Going to order some more here soon I'll have to post one of these for myself on that brand.
