I saw giant fields of sunflowers years ago driving west as the sun poked up behind me.. Those South Dakota fields were just a blaze of YELLOW... I had forgotten about them until just recently. Our niece had sent us a small packet of "wild flower seeds that my wife had spread in one of her rock gardens when we arrived in Maine in Mid May, this year, for the summer. Lots of love and miracle grow, bone meal and stimulating conversation and we had wild flowers everywhere. Very pretty except of one green stalk that seemed to grow about 5" a day. I have been teasing her about her "bean stalk" increasingly high over her head for a couple of months. Earlier this week the bunch of leaves at the top tipped over and yellow traces appeared in the middle. This morning the yellow exploded exhibiting the pale green disk surrounded by yellow. Who knew? I had admired them but had no idea this was a sunflower. I bet we will have a lot of them next year. Of all her flowers this is my current favorite. Ours is not as pretty as BadOscar's yet... but then he knew he had a sun flower, we just learned. Do we get some props for best bean stalk by a clueless newbie? Pictures when I earn status.
