That's all well and good until there's an electrical short ... big or small. I'm sure they'll take all the necessary precautions to protect the circuitry but I hope they keep some conventional weapons handy all the same.

First, it hasn't really been secret for the 20+ years it's been in development. Second it takes an enormous amount of power to run. I think we'll see handheld phasers before we see a handheld rail gun.
