Proud Moment
Not sure if this is the appropriate sub-forum but women don't listen anyway and I had to share this :D
Today, I was invited to shoot with some friends on private land. While there, one of the guys asked me to work with his wife. They have both been around guns for a long time but have had no formal training aside from the CHL class. She purse carries a full size M&P but recently bought a compact 9mm to carry on body (my preferred method as I despise purse carry). I worked with her on some basic drills on point shooting, drawing from concealment, and reloading. I wasn't focused so much on teaching her the skills due to time constraint but rather the importance of good training and practice. I wanted her to understand that I could seriously hurt her with a blade before she got that gun drawn, that she has to be able to get off the sights under pressure in short distance), situational awareness, etc. Anyhow, I saw that light-bulb moment happen. She got it. I am certainly not a qualified instructor, but I went over some of the things I've learned and she realized how much there is too learn. I've done several advanced pistol courses, force on force, simunition, a couple of Brownie's classes, etc and I still have much to learn. She is definitely interesting taking formal training and showed an interest in possibly taking hand to hand training if she can practice more. I worked briefly with one of the other wives that was there and they both asked me if I could shoot with them on Friday to work with them some more. I obviously said yes that I can help with some stuff but I am no substitute for an qualified instructor. I love seeing the moment when a woman "gets it" and wants to train. I am so proud :D Picture is of today when I first started working with her, shots got much better as she went. http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/...pstez480yl.jpg |

oh jeez pig
Thanks! A little backstory on myself, 4 years ago I went to a gun shop after deciding I wanted a gun at home. I signed up for their class and shot three rounds through a revolver and watched some videos. I came out of that class with about as much knowledge as I had when I walked into it: NONE Afterwards, I started doing some research online on Florida Ch 790 laws and came across a Florida gun forum. After joining, an older woman on there took me under her wing and invited me to her home to teach me the basics. A week later, she took me for my first range trip where I shot her guns. A few weeks after that, I started working with a respected instructor from the forum and started taking advanced training. I am extremely blessed to have had some great people in the gun world work with me. I went from being scared to touch different guns to now building my own AR and being a blade snob. funny I always carry at least a fred perrin bowie and a gun where permitted. So what happened yesterday, is my way of paying it forward to other women. I've done several self-defense speeches with women's groups, including "A Girl and a Gun" stressing the importance of training and having different tools in your self defense tool bag. I just got a text from that lady's daughter in law asking if she could join us on Friday as well as she wants to become more comfortable with guns. The daughter in law also reached out to Panther Concealment to get a good holster for her Sig p238 after using my gear yesterday. That flimsy nylon is going away. :D |
Ally you and Barbie are both the same way.............

Well done Ally, we need more like you in this world. Thank you for passing along what you have learned.

You are rightfully proud. I like your story and I admire what you are doing for others who are where you were. It is in the grand tradition of gun sports and personal responsibility. Proud to know you and pleased that you are part of our family. Keep up the good work. :hail: Dennis

WTG Alli, that is something to be very proud of!
GREAT JOB! |
Good job Ali, great way to pay it forward. I'm sure those ladies will be forever grateful to you for sharing some of your time and expertise.
The important part is to make gun folks realize they need to spend $ on training, there's no other way around that. Even trainers constantly train with other trainers. Good job girl :) |
