Hearing Protection Curiousity Question

No one appears to be online and I'm getting the family ready to send out to a Monster Truck Show in Hartford. Putting together "ears" for all of them. I'm not going. I'm staying home. Quiet time is good. But as I put the headsets in a backpack, I wondered:

"What do y'all use for hearing protection? I'm using a set of cheap Winchesters in the 27 db range ($15), have a pair of 30db ($25) that are Mrs.... The range is incredible, from .50 cent foam plugs to $300+ electronics.

So... what brand/style do YOU use? And would you recommend them to others?

I use a Silencio muff that has a strap that can be worn over the head or behind the head. It has served me well and I would recommend them. They are not bad for the $20.00 price. I have used more expensive ones but personally I did not notice a difference.:)

Cheap ole foam ear plugs for me. Can't afford those expensive ones being on Social Security ya know!

I use custom molded plugs. EARinc.com Guy comes to the range about twice a year.

They do a good job. kind of like this....

Oh I have a variety. I have the winchester muffs, probably the same ones your talking about from walmart. I also use foam, they are free from work. Then I have some custom molds from when I was at the quarry.

I have a pair of Howard Leight's Leightning L3, and the wife has a set of Remington's (Radians). I usually end up wearing foam earplugs. They seem to block out more noise and are more comfortable to wear for longer.

I have a bunch..from generic muffs I picked up over the years, to a set of Pelico electronics..found out not to use those on an indoor range real quick.

Why not use the Pelico's on an indoor range River?

oldrifleman 02-11-2012 11:31 AM

I use a set of foam plugs and a set of 31 db muffs together. I have already lost too much of my hearing from jet engines over the years, so I protect what I have left. Steven

Because they don't have the time to "reset" when the echo bounces back off the walls..they block out the shot, but not the echo..

I have a set of pro ears with a jack for my ipod, good to 33d....I really like them.

I have several but my Range ears are electronic Pro Ears. I really don't know if they are that much better than others when shooting indoors. But I think I paid some where around $300 for them.

I think you could do better if you would shop around.

I got a pair of the electronic muffs when I was teaching Police firearms. They're great for running the line and shooting. You can give instruction and hear the last person in line talking, yet they cut the sound right down during live fire. I got them from Cabela's catalog I think for about $39.00. Still using them.

Here are the one I use. They are 19db, have a headphone jack and most important is an automatic cut off. You don't have to put batteries in them every time you want to use them.:D

I did NOT know that River.... learned something new today! I've been thinking about electronic muffs for myself, and I shoot at an indoor range. I would have been disappointed. Appreciated!

This is true with mine too, but I have tried some really high end ones at the range and they don't seem to have this problem, but at $400+ dollars it shoudl drown out the motherinlaw screaming too....
