We had some pretty strong wind here today along with heavy rain. The next door neighbor knocked on the door and told me that the wind broke a limb (the size of a 40' tall tree) on my oak tree and it was dangling over their driveway right next to the carport like the Sword of Damocles. (just imagine a tree hanging upside down over your driveway by a sliver of wood)
When the rain died down we hooked a rope to the tip and pulled it with his truck until it broke clean so that it fell without it crashing into the house or the fence (thank heaven that went according to plan!), and then I cut it up (made a good stack of firewood).
