In NJ Public schools, we were all required to salute the flag and say the "Pledge of Allegiance" in Homeroom pretty much K-12. So it was drilled into us. It might have been better if, perhaps, they explained why it's important to do so. Because, believe it or not, there were "pre-historic Kapernicks" even in my sophomore HS class. The standard in the class was that you were not required to salute the flag (i.e. place right hand over heart and recite the "Pledge"). But you were required to stand at attention while others did. They even protested that. They just wanted to sit at their desks and gab (i.e. do whatever it is they wanted to do). There was quite a row about it. It's Funny... I recall a WB cartoon called "Old Glory." It addresses this very issue. Porky Pig (cast as a young child) doesn't understand why he should say the pledge, He falls asleep and into a dream where "Uncle Sam" shows up and explains why he should... Here is that cartoon in four parts (courtesy of YouTube) - Old Glory - Part 1 Old Glory - Part 2 Old Glory - Part 3 Old Glory - Part 4 One warning... This cartoon was done before the phrase "under God" was added to the Pledge. ![]() Last edited by FfNJGTFO; 09-19-2016 at 11:28 AM. |
