Friends
I'm downsizing my life and trying to simplify. I'm going to unload the big house and move into a smaller place we own outright. I'd like to dedicate a room to firearm storage, safe room, hobby room. I see some steel framed "safe rooms" on the internet that you assemble by bolting together and secure it to the slab. 5x12 right now does it, but a little tight with workbench, etc. I have a bedroom that's probably 9x12 I could dedicate to being a safe/gun room. There is also an exterior utility room, freestanding that I could pour walls solid, air condition, etc. Does anyone have any experience with this sort of endeavor or a source in mind? Thanks in advance. . |

We just moved about 6 months ago, in this house it has a large basement 1/2 unfinished. My wife said you can have 15x13 ish to do what I want with for my "gun room". So I framed it in and put drywall over plywood to keep out others. Have a 3' steel door and just set up the inside like I wanted. Have a small sterio, budget ran out for surround sound and don't forget ventilation for heat air. Mine had two walls that are foundation and two walls that are framed. One small closet and I am off and running.
This is probably not a huge help to you but it worked for me.

My last house, I built a concrete vault. Poured in place with 1" rebar in the 18" walls. I put a vault door on it. The most important thing is to have it well ventilated so moisture does not build up. Dedicated HVAC/elec/com/water if you are going to use for a safe room. Emergency toilet facilities or bathroom. You can spend a fortune depending on what you want in building a safe room.

I hate to have firearms outside the house, but I could tear the roof off the exterior utility room, pour the walls solid and air condition the room. It's probably only 6x8. Steel door and bars on window and I guess that would work.
How about those Fujitsu type a.c. units, do they leave a big hole where they could be pushed in? The split units are the ones I envision. |

Those split units don't have big holes.

Excellent, when I was the PoPo I saw a lot of burglaries where they just pushed a window shaker in and crawled through the hole.
Maybe I can convert the utility room/shed to a storage unit only with large safe bolted to floor and ammo on shelves. I'd just have to find work area somewhere else. Builder just quoted 60-80k for basically 400 sq ft man cave area incorporating gun room. I think I'll go simpler and use a bedroom or something as workshop since it will just be wife and I.
