I use both. It's situationally dependent for me, six of one, half dozen of the other. Both work, but I'm not surprised the over hand is somewhat slower, as another mentioned.

There's a 3rd method I'll use as well, the slingshot on the slide method. All three work just fine, depends on where my hands are when it's time. Sometimes it's the off thumb catching the release as the two hands meet, other times it's one of the other two methods.

In the Fla course last month, I was demonstrating a speed reload. I used the slide stop on the fns a couple of time, the slingshot method a few times and over the top of the slide once. They all work well for me, and if he'd shot faster in the video, he'd have a little more time for the reload. Why was he shooting so slow?

I use my left thumb to both drop the old mag, and release the slide on 1911's, right hand shooting grip/pistol position doesn't change.

With my M&P's the slide drops when I seat the mag. Again, mag release activated by the left thumb. Shooting grip/pistol position doesn't change.
